Watch: Hugh Hefner’s Widow Crystal Harris Asks Jessica Biel to Back Out of Playboy Movie Role
When it comes to the role of Mrs. Hugh Hefner, Crystal Harris no longer feels it’s a part worth taking.
“I was actually his wife, and I experienced sexual, emotional, financial and physical abuse in that relationship,” Harris, who was married to the Playboy founder for almost five years, wrote in a DM to Jessica Biel she posted publicly Oct. 8, in which she asked the actress to “reconsider” playing Hefner’s spouse in the film Playmates if it “intends to romanticize him or the Playboy world.”
While Hefner was married three times, Biel is set to play a fictional character, according to Searchlight Pictures, albeit one who’s a former Playmate, like Harris and her predecessor Kimberly Conrad.
Harris’ entreaty to Biel, which the Matchbox star has not yet commented on, echoes what the now-40-year-old shared in her 2024 memoir Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself, which detailed the dark side of her marriage to Hefner and her hindsight-is-20/20 take on life at the Playboy Mansion.
Because, admittedly, Harris’ disturbing recollections were not part of the narrative when she married the 86-year-old on New Year’s Eve in 2012 when she was 26. He died Sept. 27, 2017, at the age of 91.
Harris met him in 2008, the year Kendra Wilkinson and Holly Madison—whose 2015 book Down the Rabbit Hole offers a damning account of the years she spent as one of Hefner’s girlfriends—moved out of the mansion.

They announced their engagement in December 2010, but Harris called off the wedding a few days before she was scheduled to walk down the aisle the following summer. She told Ryan Seacrest on KIIS-FM that having “multiple girls all around, it’s not the lifestyle I wanted.”
The July 2011 issue of Playboy, featuring presumed newlywed Harris on the cover, arrived with a red banner declaring, “Runaway Bride in this issue!”
While Hefner mused on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight that “the real problems” began when lawyers got involved to discuss “the prenup and etcetera,” Harris told Howard Stern weeks later that she’d had sex only once with Hefner and, though she loved him, she was “not turned on” by him.
But she reconsidered and they got married at the Playboy Mansion at the end of 2012, the bride telling Us Weekly, “The time away really helped make me realize that where I’m meant to be is here with Hef.”
When he died, Harris said she was “heartbroken.”
“He changed my life, he saved my life,” she told People after Hefner was entombed next to Marilyn Monroe at Westwood Village Memorial Park, the publishing mogul having reserved the crypt next to the screen legend—whose pre-stardom nude photos he bought to pad the first issue of Playboy in 1953—in the Corridor of Memories mausoleum. “He made me feel loved every single day. He was a beacon to the world, a force unlike anything else. There never has and never will be another Hugh M. Hefner.”
But by 2021, when Madison and Wilkinson once again clashed publicly over their dueling accounts of their Girls Next Door days, Harris saw things a little differently.
“I understand that Holly is probably finding healing by speaking about her experience, for sure,” she wrote on social media platform MeWe at the time. “I noticed because I’m trying to find my own healing as I reflect back. I know Holly went through some very hard things at the mansion. I think some of the things I went through are harder.”

Being with Hefner “all the time,” she noted, “I became just so invested in his life almost to the point of losing myself, so I can understand her perspective.”
In therapy, she took “a ton of notes,” Harris told E! News in 2024, and those became the seeds of her book.
Noting that the title, Only Say Good Things, was inspired by Hefner’s request she do exactly that after he was gone, she explained, “I guess I didn’t realize how bad it was until I was away from it for a while.”
And, as she advised Biel, now she thinks any romanticization of that life at all is too romantic.
