Overall physical media spending increased 5%

Circana’s Mat Piscatella has posted a breakdown of the firm’s latest sales report for the U.S., providing an interesting statistic for Game-Key Cards on the Switch 2.
According to Piscatella, spending on Game-Key Cards has risen by a whopping 631% in the region during 2026. This figure is so substantial that it’s actually offset a 3% drop across all other physical media types. As such, total spending on physical media has risen by 5% overall.
Big hitters released on Game-Key Card this year include the likes of Pokémon Pokopia, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, and Resident Evil Requiem. Elden Ring in particular was highlighted by Piscatella, with the Switch 2 release helping it jump from position 41 in the charts all the way up to position 7.

It’s difficult to get a full picture of how well Game-Key Cards are selling, especially since this is only one region, but it’s clear that consumers aren’t spurning the format as much as we perhaps originally thought.
Piscatella also provided some good news on the hardware front, confirming that the Switch 2 “led the US hardware market in both unit and dollar sales for both the August and 2026 year-to-date periods”.
