Watch: Julia Stiles Has a ‘Save the Last Dance’ Reunion on ‘Dancing With the Stars’
We’re all well aware at this point that Julia Stiles didn’t actually attend Juilliard, but competing on Dancing With the Stars ain’t no square dance.
And on the ABC competition series’ Super Bowl Night Oct. 13, the Save the Last Dance alum proved she can still dance in circles, probably around you.
After making millennials sweat it out for five long weeks, Stiles’ partner Ezra Sosa turned their jazz routine into a tribute to the 2001 teen drama—chair choreography and all, leading the 45-year-old to declare, “I’ve been wanting to do that for 25 years!”
While it may have been an A and B conversation, Stiles’ former costar Sean Patrick Thomas certainly didn’t C his way out. The actor—who played aspiring doctor Derek to her wannabe dance major Sara—claimed his own seat in the ballroom, even recreating his supportive audition stance.
Which begs the question: Should we save some space in our schedule for one last dance?
“I’m envisioning, like, me doing the Debbie Allen character in Fame,” Stiles posited to E! News of a follow-up in an exclusive 2021 interview, “where now she’s a dance teacher and she’s smacking her cane against the ballet bar.”
Sounds like it could be slammin’…
Asked in the past where he feels Sara and Derek have ended up, “I can never think of something that sounds plausible,” Thomas, 55, told E!. “Unless they ended up getting married somehow. But that seems too easy.”
It’s admittedly “tough for me to kind of wrap my brain around how that would come to pass,” he added. “But, you know, if somebody had a good idea, I’d definitely take a look.”
Of course, their dance cards are a bit full at the moment.
Before suiting up for his role in ABC’s police procedural The Rookie, Thomas—who shares daughter Lola, 18, and son Luc, 16, with wife of 20 years Aonika Laurent Thomas—spent two seasons on superhero series Gen V and appeared in Prime’s Cruel Intentions reboot.
Meanwhile, Stiles is set to star in both the holiday film Unbearable Christmas and psychological thriller TV series Recap—after she attempts to win the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

But the mom to Strummer, 8, Arlo, 4, and Henry, 2, (with husband Preston Cook) is willing to spend a bit of time defining Sara and Derek’s hypothetical relationship.
“They’d run into each other at, like, the grocery store,” pitched the Brooklyn-based star, “and both have their adult lives and then you take it from there.”
Should they make our early aughts dreams come true, Stiles knows at least one move she would change.
Desperate to believably portray a professional dancer in the OG film, the then-19-year-old would beg off when choreographer Fatima Robinson offered to take the cast on “a tour of all the clubs in Chicago,” Stiles recounted. “And I know it would be until probably dawn. And I was like, ‘I can’t.'”
Two-and-a-half-decades later, the FOMO still lingers.
“We had a good time,” Thomas acknowledged. “Julia and I would shoot ’til probably something like 7, 8 o’clock at night. I’d get back to my place and I’d be starving and exhausted”
Which is when he’d get the phone call to be downstairs in 20 minutes.
“It was like, ‘Oh god, you’ve got to be kidding me,'” he admitted. “But then once we got out there, it was just incredible.”
In fact, he’d like to think all those nights out helped him to truly believe he could do it and put his back into it.
“It was fun,” said Thomas. “I mean, I don’t know what was going on with you, Julia, but a bunch of those dancers were hanging out in my trailer with liquor and it was on and crackin’ in my trailer.”
At the time, Stiles wasn’t of age to imbibe, but should they make a triumphant return to STEPPS, “I’d go to the cast parties,” she insisted to E!. “I would definitely get a babysitter for all night long.”
Basically, they’re saying there’s a chance.
“I would love to work with Julia again, now,” noted Thomas. “It would be an incredible pleasure because we’re grown-ups now.”
Echoed Stiles, “It would be so special. I would be a lot less nervous.”
And that’s how easy it is to give to charity around here. And, by charity, we mean us eager fans. Don’t put your s–t on the floor and definitely check out these Save the Last Dance secrets.
