Watch: Ben Affleck Reveals Whether He Wore a Prosthetic in ‘Gone Girl’ Shower Scene
Ben Affleck wants this rumor gone, girl.
More than a decade after Gone Girl director David Fincher alleged the Oscar winner shut down production on the thriller for his refusal to wear a New York Yankees cap, Affleck revealed his take on what really transpired on set.
“He’s such a lying motherf–ker,”Affleck, a notorious Boston Red Sox fan, said during an Oct. 12 appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. “That is such a f–king lie. He loves to say s–t like that.”
However, the frustration over the rumor was all in good fun.
“I do love him and I’m friends with him and I adore him,” the 54-year-old explained. “And he’ll f–king lie if he thinks it’ll get a reaction. He’s got a very dark sense of humor and I know he thought like, ‘Ah, I’ll make Ben suffer for this for many years.’”
While the Good Will Hunting alum—dad to Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 14, with ex Jennifer Garner—owned up to refusing to wear a Yankees hat on the Rosamund Pike-led film, he assured the situation was a lot less dramatic.
“I don’t think anyone had said no to him about anything,” he continued. “We were doing this airport scene and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I think you’re wearing a Yankees hat,’ and I said, ‘I don’t think that’s a good idea, David.’”
But unlike Fincher’s recounting of the story—which claimed the Argo star was too devout to the Red Sox to even put the hat on—Affleck claimed he expressed that him wearing a Yankees hat would take the audience out of the story.
“It’s just going to be a big distraction if I’m wearing a Yankees hat,” Affleck recalled telling Fincher. “I said, ‘Let’s just do something else.’ Then, he decided, ‘No, no, no, it has to be a Yankees hat.’”

And though Fincher claimed production was halted for several days regarding the dispute, the Armageddon actor recalled it being “all of 20 minutes.”
Then finally, Affleck says that Fincher approached him for a compromise.
“He was like, ‘What about the Mets?’” Affleck recalled. “I was like, ‘All right, sure man. F–k it.’”
While Fincher shared his perspective on the official Gone Girl commentary, the Pearl Harbor star had previously revealed the dispute while doing press for the film back in 2014. At the time, he referred to the tiff as a “legitimate fight.”
“It was an uprising; it was a coup, I rioted,” Affleck told the New York Times. “It was a one-man riot against the Yankees.”
But even back then, Affleck did give Fincher his gratitude for letting him sport a Mets cap in the scene. As he put it, “That was very Switzerland.”
