Watch: Keri Russell Reveals She and Matthew Rhys Had “Sex All the Time” While in Costume on The Americans
Spoilers ahead for The Diplomat season four.
The Diplomat is saying goodbye to a beloved character.
Season four of the Keri Russell-led Netflix political thriller, which dropped on the streamer Oct. 15, revealed the fate of U.K. Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), confirming he died in a helicopter crash in India off-screen.
The characterâwho married his girlfriend Thema in the season three finaleâwas noticeably absent in the first few episodes of the fourth season. But itâs not until the end of the third episode that Dennisonâs death, and its circumstances, are confirmed.
U.K. Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) reveals during a meeting with Kate Wyler (Russell) and her often-estranged husband U.S. Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) that he sent Dennison to Amritsar to meet with the Indian Prime Minister before the fatal crash.Â
While Kate and Dennison shared romantic tension throughout the showâs previous seasons, nearly acting on their feelings in season three, they ultimately chose not to explore a romantic relationship.
Still, due to the pairâs close bondâboth personally and professionallyâhis death hits Kate hard, leaving her reeling over the loss of her friend and political ally.
And for Russell, her character having to navigate the tragedy is âdevastating,â yet also âpowerful.â
âWhen youâre in service, but traveling, everything is really heightened,â she told Deadline in an interview published Oct. 15, âso the bonds you make when youâre away from home, away from the distractions of everyday life, the people that you meet, itâs extraordinarily deep and passionate.â
âI think that character for Kate is really pivotal,â she added. âSo to lose him is monumental, but I also think realistic to these worlds.â

Despite losing Dennisonâand therefore Gyasiâ, the 50-year-old shared that she believes the creative choice ultimately pays off.
âI mean, it’s such a shock, obviously,â she told Collider in an Oct. 15 interview, âbut I love what it does for the story.â
As Russell put it, âIt’s a part of storytelling that someone is so beloved that you would never expect. Because he is so beloved, Dennison. Itâs a shock, and I think it changes all the characters and all the dynamics.â
