Watch: Julia Stiles Has a ‘Save the Last Dance’ Reunion on ‘Dancing With the Stars’
There are way more than 10 things Julia Stiles loves about Heath Ledger.
In fact, the actress recently revealed she’ll be paying tribute to her late 10 Things I Hate About You costar on Dancing With the Stars’ Dedication Night Oct. 20.
And when you hear her song selection, you may think it’s just too good to be true. But yes, she and dance partner Ezra Sosa confirmed they will be performing their contemporary routine to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” the song Ledger’s character Patrick Verona serenaded Stiles’ Kat Stratford with in one of the most beloved scenes from the 1999 movie.
“It was a really special moment in time,” she recalled in a recent livestream reshared on TikTok. “It was really, really, really, special, and we’re going to capture that in our performance.”
With the dance coming 18 years after Ledger’s tragic death, both fans and Sosa have noted they’ve already started crying over what will surely be an emotional performance. However, Stiles made it clear they’re “going to give you tears of joy too” as they remember the Oscar winner.
“It was important to me that, in the music and in the dance, that we have the somber tribute to him because obviously he’s passed away and he’s no longer with us,” the 45-year-old added, “but also that scene brings so much joy to people. And his energy in it, I wanted to have musically and in terms of the choreography. We want to have the joyful celebration of when he was around.”
Just 17 years old when she made the movie—a high school reimagining of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew—Stiles remembers the then-19-year-old Ledger as “this cool, older bad boy who had just gotten off the plane from Australia,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2019, “and had such a zest for life.”
The film is widely credited with providing their breakout roles. And Ledger agreed that, when it came to working with Stiles, “We’re fantastic together,” he told the outlet back in 1999. “She’s beautiful, she’s so sweet. And when she smiles, she lights up the camera.”
Of course, the Bourne star couldn’t take her eyes off his talents either.
“He was amazing. He was such a bright light,” Stiles raved to E! News in 2025 about his performance in the movie, which also featured Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Gabrielle Union, Allison Janney and Larry Miller. “We all had such a good time and were close on that set, and he just walked into the room and lit it up.”

Indeed, Ledger’s spark was not only apparent in his acting but also in the kind of man he was offscreen.
“He was very kind and generous to me,” Stiles continued, “which, when you’re an actress in your first leading role in a big studio movie, you need to feel comfortable with the other person. And he was very generous that way.”
She points to Ledger’s reaction after her iconic poem scene as an example.
“He was such a gracious actor,” she told Access Hollywood in 2021. “The scene where I’m reading the poem and I start to cry, I did not expect to cry. We did it in one or two takes. But when we were done and they were going to turn the camera around and get his coverage, he didn’t try and compete. He said, ‘This is your scene and I’m just handing it over to you.’”
As Stiles put it, it “just took a lot of selflessness and maturity to be like, ‘I don’t need to upstage you.’”
In fact, Ledger had previously listed that scene as one of his favorites in the film.
“Julia reads a poem and it’s just knockout,” he told the outlet in 1999. “She’s incredible.”

After 10 Things I Hate About You, Stiles and Ledger went on to star in many movies—with her credits including Save the Last Dance, the Bourne franchise and The Prince and Me and his including A Knight’s Tale, Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight. But in January 2008, he died from an accidental overdose of prescription medications at age 28.
“Heath and I did not keep in touch after filming ended,” Stiles told Australian outlet ABC in 2016, “but when I heard about his death, I was incredibly sad, I was very shocked. He was such a force, such a vibrant person, right at the really exciting time of his life.”
So while she hates that Ledger is not around and the fact that he cannot call, his legacy lives on through his movies like 10 Things I Hate About You—a film so loved fans could never hate it, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
