A lot of Sonic fans are eager to see the likes of Sonic Adventure make a return as a remake or remaster – for some reason. Yet according to a new interview with Automaton, Sonic boss Takashi Iizuka seems keen to focus on new games over remasters or remakes.

Essentially, he states that the team’s resources are limited, so rather than use such resources recreating an existing game, he would rather produce something completely new.

Here’s what he had to say:

“We hear all sorts of requests from the fan community for remakes and remasters, such as people asking us to port Sonic Unleashed. But our resources are limited… Rather than using those limited resources to make remakes and remasters, we have a stronger desire to provide fans with new games and deliver new surprises.

“With remakes and remasters, you’re essentially providing the same experience again. But these days, remaking an old game requires about as many resources as creating a new title. You have to remake all the graphics, and you can’t simply release the gameplay as it was back then because many things are deemed rough by modern standards.”

He does, however, acknowledge that some Sonic games might be difficult to obtain these days, or in some cases remain completely unplayable. With stuff like this, he simply advises to “wait a little longer”.

Still, as much as we love a good remake and remaster, we do appreciate Sonic Team’s desire to provide completely fresh experiences – even if they can still be a bit hit or miss.

Iizuka recently confirmed that a new Sonic game is in development (quick, pretend to be shocked!), and he stated that the development team it looking at “creating a whole new kind of gameplay experience”. Sounds intriguing. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see what’s being cooking in the oven.
