Enter the Sift
The world of Minecraft just got a little bigger this week with the release of Minecraft Dungeons II on Nintendo’s systems and other platforms.
If you haven’t already tried out this new entry in the action RPG series, we’ve now put together this round up to help give you a better idea of what to expect. At the time of writing, the critic score on Metacritic is 75/100, with a user score of 8.2. Over on OpenCritic, the sequel has an average critic score of 77/100.
Here’s what some of the critics had to say about this sequel:
Destructoid – 9/10: “A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won’t cause massive damage. Expanding and improving on the original game in most conceivable ways, Minecraft Dungeons 2 is an excellent advancement in this ARPG spin-off for one of gaming’s most beloved and iconic franchises.”

DayOne – 8.5/10: “Despite a lacklustre endgame and a handful of minor issues, it’s not hard to see Minecraft Dungeons II as the game the original was meant to be. The combat is flashier, tougher and more engaging. The world is bigger and more cohesive. The character builds are more varied. Most importantly, it all just feels confident. This isn’t merely Diablo with a Minecraft skin, but a fantastic dungeon crawler with a hopefully bright future ahead.”
Press Start – 8/10: “Minecraft Dungeons II adds depth without losing the approachable chaos that made its predecessor work. The Sift and expanded gear game broaden the formula, while a reduction in start-and-stop co-op menu faffing is greatly appreciated. I just wish its teasing glimpses of an open world went further.”
IGN – 6/10: “Minecraft Dungeons 2 is a shallow ARPG that provides a few evenings of mindless dungeon delving fun, but not a lot beyond that. Aside from the new Sift realm, which has a some cool new ideas and creatures to admire as you and your friends carve your way through it, there’s just not much to make this sequel stand out. It makes poor use of Minecraft’s iconic world, feeling like little more than a skin slapped onto a generic Diablo-like, with a barebones story and skin-deep hack-and-slash combat. This low-stakes action isn’t a bad way to pass the time, especially if you’re intimidated by the hilariously crunchy menus and buildcrafting of more serious ARPGs, but there also aren’t a ton of compelling reasons to play this one beyond that.”
GameSpot – 7/10: “Dungeons 2 isn’t a radical reinvention, and rightly so. The first game was already an enjoyable, approachable dungeon crawler, even if it was deliberately lightweight. Dungeons 2 adds depth and connects its world to the wider Minecraft universe while adding a meaningful economy, a build system with considerably more freedom to experiment, and more post-campaign activities.”
GamesRadar – 3.5/5: “Despite its few irritations, Minecraft Dungeons 2 is a classic example of ‘how the first game should have been done’. It’s impressively balanced, and rewards experimentation and careful enchantments, while still feeling like a Minecraft game. There’s depth there for those who seek it, but younger siblings will have just as much fun spamming the attack button and screaming when Enderman randomly shows up.”
