Watch: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Alum Isaiah Washington Breaks Silence on Wife Jenisa’s 2025 Death
The carousel never stops turning, and Grey’s Anatomy is never devoid of drama.
Naturally, the season 23 premiere of the Shondra Rhimes series Oct. 15 kicked off with a bang, not only teasing a possible exit for Dr. Jo Wilson, (Camilla Luddington), but also pushing one, or two, of epi into every fan by revealing Dr. Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd) is pregnant.
Before getting to the major traumas, though, some of the other Grey Sloan doctors proved they’re still taking many visits to the on-call room. Case in point: cardiothoracic head Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) and resident Dr. Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane) are still picking, choosing and loving to sneak around their fellow hospital staff given their inappropriate romantic relationship.
Meanwhile, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) popped into Grey Sloan long enough to see that things are going downhill following the establishment of a new VIP floor, with the help of new Chief of Surgery Dr. Seth Norton (James Wolk). Unfortunately, Meredith’s wedding plans with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) seem to be all halted for now—as Speedman did not appear in the episode and Meredith was not sporting any kind of engagement ring in the episode.
But rest assured, Grey’s executive producer Meg Marinis confirmed the R.J. Decker star will return to the OR floor soon enough—and vows will be written on a Post-It at the very least.
“Yes, we will see Nick,” Marinis told Deadline in an interview published Oct. 15. “The engagement is still on. Meredith Grey has never really worn a ring, even when she was with Derek. So, she’s not necessarily a ring wearer, but that’s not to say that once they get married they may have wedding bands. We’ll pick up that story though, don’t worry.”
As for Dr. Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.), his firing has worked out perfectly for the actor. Shum Jr. has been able to seamlessly continue his tenure on Dancing With the Stars while his Grey’s Anatomy counterpart spent his premiere screentime embracing unemployment by playing video games.

And as for those major cliffhangers at the end of the episode? Griffith still hasn’t figured out how to tell her boyfriend Wes Bryant (Trevor Jackson) that she cheated on him with her ex Dr. Lucas Adams (Nikho Terho) last season—and to make matters worse her pregnancy test comes back positive at the end of the episode.
For those who have been watching Griffith’s love triangle unfold from the OR gallery, it may seem likely that her baby’s father is Lucas, considering she and Wes had been so careful about using condoms while having sex. But Marinis emphasized that sometimes hoofbeats do, in fact, mean zebras and not horses.
“It does not automatically mean it is Lucas,” Marinis told Deadline. “It is a big old question, and it’s messy.”
Finally, the tease of Jo’s exit was the very last thing said in the episode. While her husband Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) sneakily steals some of her old prescriptions just before she walks in the door, Jo delivers the real blow—admitting that she simply can’t recover from her birth trauma while working at Grey Sloan.
As she tells her husband just before the credits role, “I quit.”
