A Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Is in the Works at Paramount

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film.

Deadline has reported that the film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is best known for producing the Transformers and GI Joe films. CD Projekt Red is also onboard to produce, though there is no word on any actors, writers, or directors attached to the project. It’s unclear if it will faithfully adapt the titular video game from 2020, or if this will be another story set in the Cyberpunk universe, similar to Netflix’s animated Edgerunners series.

If this is a straight up adaptation, Paramount already has some built-in starpower that it can utilize. In the game, Keanu Reeves played Johnny Silverhand, a radical Tyler Durden-style character that lives in the protagonist’s head. Idris Elba also joined the game’s cast in an expansion known as Phantom Liberty, which feels like a really cool storyline to adapt, though it may not work as well as a mainstream entry point into that universe. Either way, it’s exciting to hear that Night City is making its way to the big screen.

CD Projekt Red is also hard at work on the next Cyberpunk game, which is expected to release after The Witcher 4. As a result, we may not see the next game until 2029 or 2030 at the absolute earliest. But that may also be perfect timing, as a Cyberpunk film may not be ready until around that time either. Reeves has already expressed interest in appearing in the next Cyberpunk game, so maybe he’d play Johnny Silverhand on the big screen too.Paramount is leaning heavy into major video game adaptations, as it has Street Fighter releasing next weekend. In 2028, the studio will also release a Call of Duty movie written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by Peter Berg. Paramount is making all kinds of big moves, as it just merged with Warner Brothers, meaning it has a wealth of new IP to take advantage of.
