Watch: Leighton Meester, Adam Brody Share Whether Kids Will Follow in Their Footsteps
Do not insult Death Cab for Cutie—and do not underestimate Adam Brody.
But in the debut episode of E!’s Greatest Year in Pop Culture, which premiered on Fandango Oct. 5 and explores the cultural impact of 2003, The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz admitted he wasn’t immediately sold on Brody as heartthrob Seth Cohen.
“After he was done, I was like, ‘Who is that guy?’” Schwartz recalled of Brody’s audition in the documentary, which is also available on the E! Entertainment YouTube channel, as well as the E! website and app. “He didn’t even bother with one line of dialogue. Get him out of here.”
And casting director Patrick Rush admitted that while he had championed the Gilmore Girls alum for the role, “We had some speed bumps along the way in the auditioning process.”
As he acknowledged, “It didn’t go well.”
In fact, Rush can still remember exactly why Brody pushed the wrong buttons with the team.
“He didn’t even read for Seth,” Rush recalled. “He ad-libbed and riffed. That’s when the sweat starts. I’m kind of looking at him like, ‘What are you doing? Please don’t do that.’”
So, the casting director couldn’t even blame Schwartz for feeling off-put.
“Josh Schwartz, who was the most even-keeled guy in history, said, ‘I hate that kid. I never want to see him again,’” Rush recalled, nevertheless noting of himself: “I just, for some reason, was like ‘I don’t know what that was but please let me bring him in again.’ He came back and he was great.”

In round two, even Schwartz—who had already given his stamp of approval to Mischa Barton as Marissa Cooper, Ben McKenzie as Ryan Atwood and Rachel Bilson as Summer Roberts—was won over.
“The character all of a sudden made sense,” Schwartz shared, “and any fear that the network had, like are girls going to find him equally as crushable I guess you could say as Ryan, instantly went out the window.”
And all these years later, former E! correspondent Kristin dos Santos argued that no one could’ve played Seth better. As she emphasized in the doc, “Adam Brody cast as Seth Cohen, I think made the show.”
