Watch: Reese Witherspoon and Ex Ryan Phillippe Reunite at Son Deacon’s College Graduation
Ryan Phillippe didn’t have any intention on getting starstruck during his 2006 Oscars date with Reese Witherspoon.
But the Cruel Intentions actor ended up having what he described as an “out-of-body, out-of-mind experience” when his movie Crash won Best Picture just moments after Witherspoon’s Best Actress victory for her performance in 2005’s Walk the Line.
“It was a wild night altogether because my wife at the time, Reese Witherspoon, also won Best Actress,” Phillippe recalled during his Oct. 14 appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark. “While she was backstage giving her post-award interviews, they called Best Picture for Crash.”
“Morgan Freeman was the presenter of the Best Picture and I had never met Morgan Freeman so I fanned out on stage at the Oscars,” the 52-year-old continued. “I’m like, ‘I’ve always wanted to meet you, sir,’ and this is while the producer is accepting the award. Kind of a funny moment.”
But the celebrations didn’t end there. As Phillippe—who shares kids Ava, 25, and son Deacon, 21, with Witherspoon, as well as daughter Kai, 15, with Alexis Knapp—remembered, he was partying “up until probably 5 or 6 in the morning.”
He added, “We had such a fun after-party.”

However, Phillippe’s seven-year marriage to Witherspoon ended months later, with the Legally Blonde actress filing for divorce that November. Though separated, the pair have continued to co-parent their two kids over the years.
In fact, Phillippe and Witherspoon, 50, reunited earlier this year for their son’s graduation from New York University.
“My ex-wife and I are blessed with kids who have [an] incredible sense of self,” Phillippe told E! News in February, “and also are incredibly conscientious and very academically driven—intelligent. So, they make really good choices.”
Describing himself and Witherspoon as “sounding boards” for their children as they begin to pursue careers in the entertainment industry, the Shooter star added, “It’s nice to offer your experience to them and to let them know what you’ve been through and to guide them that way.”
