Rumors, we get rumors, we get lots and lots of rumors…
A report from Fightful Select last night corroborated a Wrestling Observer one from a couple weeks ago that claimed Maxwell Jacob Friedman’s AEW World title defense against Kenny Omega was originally set for Sun. July 26’s Redemption PPV until then-champ MJF pushed for it to be moved up.
Fightful’s heard MJF was the “driving creative force” behind Omega defending against the TNT champ at Redemption. While Friedman apparently didn’t specify that Kevin Knight should be the TNT champ when they get to Montreal this weekend, it was said he was in favor of Knight joining The Don Callis Family. Max denies that, but it fits. In addition to Knight having won the TNT title before he turned heel, if hadn’t been in the Family, he wouldn’t have Sunday’s title shot in-story (he earned it by agreeing to be on MJF’s losing Forbidden Door cage match team).
Word also went around the wrestle web recently that AEW replaced MJF with Omega on the poster for Aug. 5’s Grand Slam Mexico. That makes sense given the title change, but it was also taken as another sign Max is away from the promotion for a bit after dropping the belt to Kenny.
It’s also been said that MJF is part of Tony Khan’s plans for All In on Aug. 30. Does whatever he’ll be doing in London tie into his creative vision for Knight and/or the TNT championship? Could the Burberry-wearing Long Islander show up in Quebec at Redemption this weekend?
