John Cusack won’t be kept from saying anything he wants.

In fact, that was the Say Anything star’s mindset as he embarked on his journey to publish his first graphic novel Momo.

“I didn’t want to negotiate telling a story really,” John told Variety in an interview published July 24 ahead of his appearance at 2026 San Diego Comic-Con to promote the book. “When you ask somebody to put like $20 to $30 million into a bank account [for a film budget], they want to have an opinion, and they’re afraid and all that stuff.”

So, the 60-year-old—who has largely remained out of the public eye in recent years—added, “This was just like I wrote it, and I said, ‘I like this story.’”

And once he wrote the book, he tapped the “beautiful, wonderful” artist Ignacio Noé to do the graphic novel’s illustrations.

“Nobody edited anything I wrote or that he drew, and so it’s really a piece of work that was just done by two people,” John continued. “It was just me and Ignacio’s story, and that doesn’t happen today.”

As for why the 1408 actor—who previously co-wrote a 2016 collection of essays titled Things that Can and Cannot Be Said—decided to make his first novel a visual medium?

“I always thought they were the closest things to film,” he explained. “Really, you’re picking out shots, and they’re so cinematic.”

While John has found other avenues to be creatively fulfilled, he isn’t the only family member to shift his focus away from the big screen. Indeed, his sister Joan Cusack recently reflected on how she has spent most of her time in the last decade while taking on fewer acting roles.

“I’ve got to say, I did at a certain point say, ‘Wait a second, I really want to make a priority of being in Chicago where I live and raising my kids,’” the Shameless alum told E! News last month at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Toy Story 5. “This is what I’ve been doing for 10 years.”

The villages and the towns and the architecture—everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”It’s clean,” Ellen continued. “Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here. We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Terrence HowardThe actor insisted there’d be no encore after he finished his five-year run on Empire. When Extra asked Terrence about his future ahead of the musical drama series’ sixth and final season in 2019, he responded, “Oh, I’m done with acting. Shortly after receiving his sixth Oscar nod for his final film, 2017’s Phantom Thread, the thespian had his rep issue a statement informing fans that he “will no longer be working as an actor.
