Watch: Celeb Paycheck Confessions: Pete Davidson, Hailey Bieber & More
When Tiffani Thiessen recently admitted that her residuals from Saved by the Bell were “negative now” and not even worth the cost of printing the checks, fellow Bayside alum Mario Lopez praised her comment as “real talk.”
But if that came as a surprise, Thiessen was echoing what Mark Paul Gosselaar revealed years ago about what the stars of the cherished Saturday morning teen show made—or didn’t make—from decades of endless reruns.
“We made really bad deals,” the Franklin & Bash alum said in 2019 on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. “It is what it is. You move on, you learn. Great experience.”
On the other end of the great experience spectrum, Lisa Kudrow did not deny the amount when asked by The Times why the cast of Friends still made $20 million a year each in residuals.
“Because Phoebe Buffay is so great?” she cracked. Though on a more serious note the Emmy winner allowed that the late Matthew Perry couldn’t have been any greater, noting, “He was just beyond us all.”
But between $20 million and not worth the paper it’s printed on is a vast chasm of sums that entertainers have been paid for their work, whether on blockbuster films and beloved TV shows or smaller passion projects that they were eager to make, no matter the cost.

For instance, George Clooney banked a dollar for writing Good Night, and Good Luck and turned his salaries for acting and directing over to the production—which at least earned six Oscar nominations.
But, as he told the Los Angeles Times in 2005, the $500,000 he was paid per advertisement in Italy for sunglasses, cars and Martini & Rossi helped keep him flush when he was spending more on movies than he was making from them.
And that was a decade before he became the $40 million face of Nespresso.
