Watch: See Josh Hartnett and Wife Tamsin Egerton’s Rare Public Date Night in Paris
For Josh Hartnett, acting is just what he does for work.
“We have four kids, so it’s busy,” the 48-year-old said Oct. 2 on the U.K.’s This Morning of life on the “tiny little farm” he calls home with wife Tamsin Egerton. “My life is my family life and every once in a while I come out and do something like this—which is such an anomaly for me, and I’m a little bit nervous.”
Though, he added, thanks to his family, “I feel much more at ease with all this stuff now than I used to.”
“This stuff” is the global press tour for his new thriller Verity, in theaters now, costarring Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway. But while promoting a film doesn’t seem like something that would faze the veteran actor, he’s been candid about why he so readily settled in Egerton’s native England years ago.
“I just didn’t want my life to be swallowed up by my work,” he told The Guardian in 2024. “And there was a notion at that time you just kind of give it all up. And you saw what happened to some people back then. They got obliterated by it. I didn’t want that for myself.”
To avoid that trap, the Pearl Harbor star moved back to his Minnesota hometown at the peak of his heartthrob-era fame, took an 18-month break from filming and, he told Details in 2014, “ended up getting back together with my high-school girlfriend for a while.”

But then he met Egerton in 2011, when they played husband and wife “in the worst movie either of us has ever made,” Hartnett said during a 2024 sit-down with Julia Stiles for Interview, diplomatically not naming The Lovers. “We were shooting here in London and both had significant others, and both realized that wasn’t going to work because we really liked each other.”
He and Egerton welcomed a daughter in 2015 and another baby in 2017. As they started spending more time in the U.K., they finally made Hampshire their permanent home while awaiting the birth of their third child in 2019.

True to their commitment to privacy, Hartnett and Egerton tied the knot in 2021 at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London, swapping vows in the historic building’s Soho Room, which accommodates 12 people.
And, tucked away in the countryside of South East England with their dogs, goats and chickens, their family quietly grew again before February 2024, when Hartnett first revealed he was a father of four during his return to awards season as a star of eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer.
But while much was made of him blowing up again thanks to his wait-is-that-Josh-Hartnett turn as Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ernest Lawrence, he maintained that his step back from acting simply coincided with becoming an increasingly busy dad.
“I didn’t really take any major hiatuses that were planned, I just had kids,” he told Yahoo! Entertainment in 2021. “I started doing smaller films [that] didn’t take me away from the kids very often.”

Being in demand means having to leave town sometimes—though not for more than 180 days a year, per the terms of his U.K. marriage visa—so then he makes sure not to bring his work home with him. But one of the best things about village life, as he told The Guardian, is that “nobody cares” what he does for a living.
And that includes his own brood for now, Hartnett telling E! News ahead of Verity‘s Oct. 2 release that his kids have “never seen me in anything.”
“I think at some point they might want to,” he added, noting they watched one of their mom’s more family-friendly films. “I know some of their friends have seen me in movies, but they haven’t shown that much interest. They’re like, ‘Yeah, it’s Daddy’s work,’ but they’re just living thier lives and they’re very happy with their own stuff. They want to show me what they’re doing.”
So, while Hartnett’s return to the Hollywood spotlight is going swimmingly, his quiet family world on the farm is where the real action is.
“I never would have expected it,” he told The Guardian. “And time passes quickly. With four children, you have so much to do. In a way, less is happening. But more of the important stuff is happening.”

Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi have since moved to the Cotswolds, deciding to stay put in November 2024 after Donald Trump‘s reelection, the talk show host told to Richard Bacon in a July 2025 conversation at the Everyman theater in Cheltenham.”It’s absolutely beautiful,” she gushed about the English countryside, per the BBC. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture—everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”It’s clean,” Ellen continued. “Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here. We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
