Digital Foundry has delivered its tech verdict for The Witcher 3 Remastered; a game that, for many, will be a completely free upgrade if you owned the original Switch release.

Obviously, the difference in quality between Switch 1 and 2 is staggering, despite DF calling the original release one of the “most impressive feats” on Nintendo’s hardware. Image quality is the highlight, with docked mode featuring dynamic resolution between 540p and 1080p, with DLSS outputting to a 1080p target.

Portable modes resolution sits between 360p to 720p, with the latter being the final output target. Overall, despite noting some clear differences in quality between docked and portable play, the upgrade over the original Switch version is vast, with environments looking significantly more detailed. Texture assets have been upgraded for both scenery and characters, while animations for NPCs in the background are much improved and no longer jittery.

Frame rate is capped at 40fps in docked and portable play, so long as you’re utilising a 120hz display. Otherwise you’re looking at a 30fps cap. DF states that the 40fps target is “much too ambitious”, and that while it maintains a fairly consistent frame rate in some areas, it will drop in places like Novigrad or when battling multiple enemies at once, wavering between 30 and 40.

It’s worth checking out the full video for all of the details, but even with these drops in frame rate, this is a massive upgrade on Switch 2. One final thing to note is that while the Remastered version is exclusive to the eShop for now, a 55GB install size makes it a pretty perfect candidate for a proper physical release later down the line. Fingers crossed.
