American Idol’s Caleb Flynn Gets Life in Prison for Murdering Wife

Watch: ‘American Idol’ Contestant Caleb Flynn Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murdering Wife

Caleb Flynn has learned his fate.

After being found guilty for the February murder of his wife AshleyFlynn, the former American Idol contestant was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Oct. 5. He was also sentenced to nine years for tampering with evidence and seven years for firearm enhancements, all to be served consecutively, or one after the other.

Caleb—who also worked as a music pastor—held back tears as he heard the sentencing being read out loud, as seen in courtroom footage posted by CBS News to YouTube.

During his sentencing, Judge JeanninePratt told the 40-year-old, “Your actions were abhorrent—the layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty that you have shown, are quite honestly impossible to fathom.”

“Quite frankly sir, you used your faith to manipulate the lives of others,” the judge added, “and the court finds that deeply disturbing.”

Judge Pratt also criticized Caleb for forever changing the lives of his and his late wife’s 12-year-old and 10-year-old daughters by fatally shooting his wife at their Ohio home.

“You shattered their sense of security. You shattered their innocence. You took that from them,” the judge said. “You took from them something they can never get back: their mother. They will live with the scars of what you did for the rest of their lives.”

Both daughters shared statements that were read out loud during the sentencing, with a letter from Caleb’s 12-year-old read by his mother-in-law, Jill Smith.

“I wish that you could come to understand that actions have consequences and you have a lot to pay,” she wrote. “The least you could do is tell everyone you did it and receive your outcome.”

The preteen noted that she did not “plan on coming to see” her father in prison.

As for Caleb’s 10-year-old, she questioned how her father could “do such a thing.”

“I looked up to you. I loved you with all my heart, and then you lied to everyone,” she wrote in the statement read by Ashley’s brother-in-law MatthewKeyt. “Mommy was the perfect person, the absolute perfect person. What did she ever do to make you hate her so much?”

She also encouraged her father to “tell God that you’re sorry and that you want to confess and repent to him.”

Ashley’s family also read statements during the proceedings, with her father ToddSmith noting that they had forgiven Caleb for her death.

“We will not let anger nor bitterness consume the wonderful memory of Ashley,” he said on behalf of his family. “Your Honor, while we choose forgiveness for our own hearts, we still require absolute justice for Ashley.”

“To have Ashley’s life—which was so vibrant and full of love—cut short by such a senseless unimaginable act has radically changed our life forever,” he continued. “We truly miss and cry for her every single day.”

Miami County Jail

Caleb—who competed on season 12 of American Idol in 2013—continued to maintain his innocence during his sentencing, telling the court, “I have unfortunately lied about a lot of things over the last couple of years, but as I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying. I did not kill my wife.”

He added, “I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to.”

Shortly after Caleb’s sentencing, his attorney Patrick Mulligan said in a statement to E! News that they “will file a Notice of Appeal once the sentencing entry is filed.”

“This will begin a long process with the goal of overturning his convictions,” he continued. “Since the case was tried and the judge was required to make numerous decisions, his appellate team will have arguments to put forward.”

Caleb was arrested on Feb. 19, just three days after he’d called 911 claiming that someone had broken into his home and shot his wife.

A key piece of evidence prosecutors presented was his affair with a 24-year-old woman from his church, including an August 2025 message he wrote to her saying, “I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail.”

While he never denied cheating on his wife, Caleb and his attorneys maintained that he did not kill her.
