Matthew McConaughey isn’t quite ready to say alright, alright, alright to getting a DNA test with Woody Harrelson.
But that doesn’t mean it’s never happening.
Three years after the actors—who play fictionalized versions of themselves in the upcoming Apple TV series Brothers—revealed they discovered they’re possibly IRL brothers, Matthew and Woody shared their thoughts on getting the truth once and for all.
“We don’t need to take a DNA test,” Matthew exclusively told E! News’ Will Marfuggi at the Brothers junket interview alongside Woody, “but I’ll probably end up doing it.”
“If it’s true—geez, that’s a whole lot for me to unpack,” he continued. “If it’s not true, that’s a whole lot for him now to unpack. He’s not gonna be near as fun to hang around if it ain’t true.”
Woody agreed, admitting that he’d be “distressed” if he learned he’s not related to his True Detective costar.
“He’s more my brother than my brothers,” he explained. “Once [Matthew’s mom Mary Kathleen “Kay” McConaughey] mentioned that, and that whole ball started rolling, it’s nice to think that he actually is my brother. It makes sense.”
If you’re just catching up, Matthew’s mom previously insinuated that she had an intimate relationship with Woody’s dad Charles Harrelson, leading to speculation that Charles is Matthew’s biological father.
“No question. I believe it 100 percent,” Woody said confidently, to which Matthew stated, “I do not.”
According to the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actor, his mom was “goading” Woody. But he disagrees.

“Believe me,” Woody explained. “The way she said it, there was no question, and also, they got together during his parents’ second divorce. They were married three times to each other, and in the second divorce was when she was hanging out with Charlie, which is also right around the time this fellow was conceived.”
And Woody believes that his longtime pal doesn’t want to even entertain the idea that they could be related.
“He wants to keep his father as his father,” Woody said of Matthew’s dad James Donald “Jim” McConaughey, who died in 1992, “even though his father is my father.”
As the 65-year-old put it, “He doesn’t want to believe. You got to do the whole sentence, ‘I don’t want to believe it’s true.’”
Brothers—an eight-episode series—premieres with two episodes on Sept. 23 on Apple TV, followed by new episodes every Wednesday until Nov. 4.
