'We're Going to Do What's Right By the Game': Amazon Boss Speaks More on the Future of James Bond 007 Games 1

Amazon has further clarified its position on future James Bond games in new comments about the series and 007 First Light developer IO Interactive.

You may recall some confusion a little while ago when Jeff Gattis, head honcho at Amazon Games, passed comment on First Light and the future of the series.

At the time, he basically said any further James Bond video games would come under the Amazon banner, seeing as the IP is now owned by the company.

However, the way it was phrased implied that Amazon would be taking the series away from IO Interactive, despite having done a great job on First Light.

After Gattis’ comments caused a stir, Amazon released a statement that, to be honest, didn’t really get to the heart of what people were worried about.

Now, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Gattis is asked about James Bond again, and this time his response is easier to interpret. Basically, nothing has yet been decided on any future games.

“We did not confirm anything about who’s publishing or developing the next Bond sequel,” he says. “Like Hakan [Abrak, CEO at IO Interactive] said, we haven’t even discussed it really yet.”

Gattis continues, ultimately saying what fans want to hear.

“The game’s awesome. That’s great. I think it’s realistic to think that there would be a sequel. Technically, Amazon does own the rights to the game, but we’re going to do what’s right by the game, we’re not trying to bring everything into Amazon.

Given the success of this one, I think you probably want IOI developing it.”

He’s also asked about the potential for Amazon to acquire IOI. He says “anything’s possible,” but that there are “no conversations about that right now.”

Personally I think you only need to look at the critical and commercial success of 007 First Light to understand what will happen with the sequel.

This is obviously just speculation, but I imagine IOI will remain the developer for the sequel, and that Amazon Games may publish it now the company holds the rights to James Bond. I think that’s fairly safe to assume.

Obviously it’ll be a while before we see any signs of a follow-up (assuming one is going ahead), so it’s very early days for decisions like this. However, Gattis’ latest comments definitely lean in the right direction.
