Watch: This ‘Two and a Half Men’ Star Auditioned to Play Sandy Cohen in ‘The O.C.’ (Exclusive)
It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Peter Gallagher portraying Sandy Cohen in the iconic series, but a few familiar faces auditioned to play the beloved public defender and surfing enthusiast.
“Jon Cryer read for Sandy,” creator Josh Schwartz shared with E! for Greatest Year in Pop Culture: 2003, along with “some other members of the Brat Pack.”
Though Cryer didn’t make the Sandy Cohen cut, he did land the lead role of Alan Harper in CBS’s Two and a Half Men, which premiered in September 2003, a month after The O.C. debuted on Fox.
As for the Cohen patriarch, that role was meant for Gallagher, whose stacked resume—which already included Robert Altman and Steven Soderbergh productions—more than impressed Schwartz.
“Meeting Peter,” Schwartz said, “having him read my dialogue for the first time was a huge thrill ’cause obviously he’d been in The Player and Soderbergh and he was an incredible actor.”
From there, they began piecing together the rest of the cast, eventually finding Ben McKenzie to fill Ryan Atwood’s shoes (and white tank tops).
“He came in the room, he didn’t say three words to us,” Schwartz recalled. “I think he was nervous, but he was playing it very, very cool.”

“He wasn’t necessarily the Ryan that was originally envisioned,” the producer noted of McKenzie. “But he brought this incredible intelligence and thoughtfulness.”

As Schwartz pointed out, the role called for an active observer.
“So much of Ryan’s character had to be listening and reading people,” Schwartz added, “and not having a ton of dialogue.”
And McKenzie’s portrayal not only won him the role but also won over audiences around the world.
