Watch: Dwayne Johnson Shares Why His ‘Moana’ Role Was “Jarring” for His Kids
Dwayne Johnson as a live-action version of Moana‘s Maui—luscious flowing locks and all. What could be better than this?
Though Auli’i Cravalho handed over the strong-willed titular character’s sails to Catherine Laga’aia, her demigod counterpart is back to who he’s meant to be, reprising his role for the July 10 live-action release of the beloved Disney flick.
In a trailer released in March, a bulked-up Johnson (“That’s a suit that took a long time to put on,” he admitted to Extra in 2024) flexes, shapes shift and, yes, tells Moana, “You’re welcome.”
As for Cravalho, just 14 when she nabbed her fame-making gig in the 2016 animated film, “I believe that it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell,” the now-25-year-old detailed in a 2023 Instagram video, explaining why she wouldn’t be slipping back into Moana’s tapa top and pandanus skirt.
Which meant she would be remaining on dry land as an executive producer. Noted Cravalho, who did reprise her role for the 2024 animated sequel, “I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength.”
They dove deep to bring 19-year-old Australian actress Laga’aia to the surface.
“I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples,” she shared in a June 2024 statement, “and to represent young girls who look like me.”
Because just like the OG flick, the goal is to inspire a new generation of girls to see how far they’ll go.
“I think that the main thing about Moana is this idea of female empowerment,” Johnson told E! News in November 2024, “and this idea that we always say, ‘What’s it like being on the reef and looking beyond the reef?'”
It’s that messaging that had the 2016 version sailing to a $687 million global box office gross and the title of 2023’s most-streamed movie, with Disney devotees staring at the edge of the water for a whopping 11.6 billion minutes.
So, with the live-action version finally setting sail, we’re unearthing a few beneath-the-surface secrets.
What can we say except, you’re welcome?
