Watch: Mariska Hargitay to Host Emmys 2026, the First Woman to Emcee in 15 Years
Mariska Hargitay has been the star of one of the most-watched shows on TV for almost 27 years, so it’s not as if she’s been in hiding.
But if it feels as if the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actress is suddenly everywhere, you’re not mistaken. There she was courtside during the NBA Finals—and then riding in the championship parade with the New York Knicks. Less than two weeks later, she was back at Madison Square Garden to attend Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s wedding with her husband of 22 years, Peter Hermann.
Meanwhile, she squeezed in those outings in between performances of Every Brilliant Thing on Broadway. And then, the 62-year-old celebrated the end of her stage run by confirming she’ll host the 2026 Emmys on Sept. 14, where she’s also a nominee.
And at some point this summer, the mother of three—she and Hermann share sons August, 20, and Andrew, 14, and daughter Amaya, 15—will go back to her day job, playing Capt. Olivia Benson on SVU, for a 28th season.
But the timing of this joyful onslaught of exciting experiences is no coincidence.
It’s been a year since the release of My Mom Jayne, Hargitay’s now-Emmy-nominated documentary about her late mother, Jayne Mansfield, who was killed in a car wreck at the age of 34 when her destined-to-be-famous youngest child was 3. And the opportunity to present a fuller picture of the historically misunderstood Hollywood bombshell proved nothing short of cathartic.

Making the film “gave me a lot of internal space back,” Hargitay told People in May before she took over Daniel Radcliff‘s role in Every Brilliant Thing for a six-week run at NYC’s Hudson Theater. “I think it changed my nervous system and I did feel so relieved and so free, and so it felt like a natural progression.”
Noting that she’d never even been in a play, while Mansfield appeared on Broadway at 22, she agreed that making her Great White Way debut on the heels of directing My Mom Jayne was “something to take in and behold.”
Hermann helped her memorize lines, Hargitay shared, while their kids were “just excited for me to spread my wings.
But maybe even Hargitay didn’t dare to dream that, as she was leaving it all on the stage every night, that her beloved New York Knicks would be embarking on an epic playoff run that included a 13-game winning streak, an awe-inspiring come-from-behind Game 4 victory and their first NBA championship in 53 years.
Hargitay caught as much of it in person as she could, it soon becoming apparent that her Jalen Brunson superfandom was a mutual admiration society when, as she congratulated him after a May 21 playoff win, he promised her he’d catch her on Broadway.
“Love him, and I’m so inspired by him,” Hargitay told Access Hollywood of her bond with the athlete. “I’ve carried his spirit with me during this.”

When the Knicks pulled out that Game 4 win, she was on her feet, cheering and twinning courtside with Swift, Este Haim and Alana Haim in “Stevie Knicks” T-shirts. And though she wasn’t there to see the team clinch it in five in San Antonio, Hargitay and son August were among the VIPs riding on the Brunson family float during their June 18 victory parade.
A week later, the Knicks’ star point guard watched her slam-dunk performance in Every Brilliant Thing.

And, back to December Game 4 for a sec, that marked a reunion for Hargitay and Swift, who was famously already a naming-her-cat-Olivia-Benson-level fan when she cast the SVU actress in her 2015 “Bad Blood” music video.
But while Hargitay brought her daughter to the L.A. world premiere of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert movie, she hadn’t been seen hanging out with the artist in a decade.
Not that their ties weren’t already wedding invite-worthy, but there was no way Hargitay wasn’t going to make that guest list after basically collapsing in the bride-to-be’s arms with relief after watching the Knicks’ comeback.
Sure enough, she and Hermann were among the revelers July 3 at MSG, abiding by the strict confidentiality rules ahead of time but allowing themselves to be snapped en route by hairstylist Chris McMillan, so he could show off his client’s “cool girl” bob.

And just when it might have been time for most people to take a breather, NBC announced that Hargitay will be hosting the 2026 Emmys—and she’s in the running for two, Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special for My Mom Jayne and Outstanding Direction for a Documentary/Nonfiction Special.
But while she’s no stranger to TV’s biggest night, having won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2006 (among her eight nominations for SVU), it sounds as though someone rather enjoyed the rush of performing live onstage and is ready for yet another challenge.
“That’s the thing about getting older,” Hargitay told People in May. “There’s so much more clarity, so I feel focused and clear and free—and a little more fearless.”
