Paul Heyman has discussed for the first time what was said between him and Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42 following The Beast’s losing effort against Oba Femi.
Following the match, Lesnar removed his gloves and boots, placing the gear in the center of the ring in a gesture that left most people assuming he had decided to retire on the spot. Brock then appeared uncharacteristically emotional as he spoke with his longtime advocate, Heyman, and the two men embraced.
The words shared in the moment could have remained an enduring mystery, much like what Bill Murray whispered into Scarlett Johansson’s ear at the end of Lost in Translation. However, Heyman decided to reveal what he and Brock said during a new interview on Insight with Chris Van Vliet.
“What a beautiful moment you and Brock Lesnar shared at WrestleMania 42,” Van Vliet said to Heyman. “Can you take me into the ring? What was the conversation that you guys shared during that long embrace?”
“I thanked him for everything. He thanked me for everything. I told him that I love him. He told me that he loves me,” Heyman said. “Then I asked him if he finds it funny that the two of us are standing in the middle of the ring, in the middle of the stadium, in the middle of WrestleMania, being broadcast all over ESPN, telling each other that we love each other. I said, ‘This is kind of a surreal moment.’ And he goes, ‘F*** them! Don’t worry about that, this is just for us.’ Okay, my Beast, happy to participate in the moment!”
Paul continued: “It was just a very personal moment that we were not hesitant to share with the rest of the world. It was a very emotional moment. You know, I talk for a living, and I find it hard to convey in words what that was like. It was just a moment that happened and was true.”
“I guess that it was a moment to say thank you, but it wasn’t a retirement. Brock Lesnar is still competing,” Van Vliet said.
“Indeed he is,” Heyman replied.
“So what do we make of that moment?” Van Vliet asked. “What should we make of that moment at WrestleMania 42?”
“Remember how I felt if I’m an audience member,” the WWE Hall of Famer said. “I would remember how I felt watching it. I’d remember what that moment was. I remember all that it encompassed, and I would be appreciative of the fact that I got to live that moment and experience it and hold it in my data bank as a fan.”
Of course, as Van Vliet mentioned, Lesnar ended up not retiring at WrestleMania. He soon returned to attack Femi on Raw, and then went on to defeat The Ruler at Clash in Italy on May 31. The two men are now widely expected to face off in a rubber match, which may or may not be Brock’s final chapter, at SummerSlam in Lesnar’s home state of Minnesota.
What do you make of the moment between Lesnar and Heyman, Cagesiders? Would you have preferred their words remain a mystery? Let us know in the comments.
