Official US Trailer for 17th Century Drama ‘Rose’ Starring Sandra Hüller​

“In the village, they call him the soldier.” Mubi revealed the new official US trailer for Rose, an acclaimed German film shot in B&W made by the Austrian filmmaker Markus Schleinzer. This originally premiered at Berlinale 2026 earlier this year, and it also played at Telluride and New York, with Vancouver, London & Chicago up next. It already debuted in Germany in April but won’t open in the US until December – trying an awards season release. It’s Austria’s official entry to the 99th Academy Awards. The extraordinary German actress Sandra Hüller stars as a woman in the early 17th century, who arrives in a village disguised as a man and tries to be a good citizen at any cost. NYFF adds: “this meticulously detailed historical drama about a woman’s drive toward self-empowerment elegantly dramatizes the two-sided coin of human nature—the striving for personal freedom we all crave and the narrow-minded bigotry that stands in our way.” Everyone is talking about how great Sandra is in this film. “Every life, every day is a political act — so we cannot hide,” states Schleinzer, who’s queer. “We have to change things if we want to have a better life as a community.” The film also stars Caro Braun, Marisa Growaldt, Godehard Giese, Augustino Renken. With the passage of time, he overcomes their doubts and, proving himself to be a hard-working, God-fearing man, becomes a part of their community. However, his quest for acceptance is built upon a bold-faced lie. The true and twisted tale of a swindler who, defying her birth as a woman, comported herself as a man and deceived a village.” Rose is directed by Austrian filmmaker Markus Schleinzer, director of the films Michael and Angelo previously. The screenplay is written by Markus Schleinzer & Alexander Brom. Produced by Johannes Schubert, Philipp Worm, Tobias Walker, Karsten Stöter. This initially premiered at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year – it already opened in German cinemas in April 2026.
