After saying goodbye to WWE again, this time over its leadership’s support for and alliances with U.S. President Donald Trump, Mick Foley declared himself a utility player for his new pro wrestling home, AEW.
Foley already debuted in AEW at Double or Nothing a couple weekends back, including taking a low blow from now-three-time World champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman in the ring while hosting the pre-show. MJF and Foley are both Long Island natives, and Max pitched a six week television angle to Mick before he called off plans for a retirement (death)match he wanted to have when he turned 60 last year. Plus, if the WWE Hall of Famer decides to try again at 61 or 62-years-old (his birthday is this Sunday), his new boss Tony Khan is enthusiastic to have Foley’s last match in AEW.
I’m not a mathematician*, but to me that all adds up to Foley still leaving the door open to one last match. If he’d told MJF or TK, “I can never take another bump of any kind guys, I’m sorry,” I don’t think we’d have gotten Max’s low blow or Khan’s quote about a future Foley match.
And when he was asked about the possibility of wrestling again by Ariel Helwani today (June 2), Mick’s answer tells me my math is right:
“I lost 100 pounds, and it made my life so much easier. I used to have to stop a couple of times just walking up a moderate hill, and now I don’t even realize I’m walking up hills when I do them because I’m not getting winded, not like I used to.
“I don’t know (about another match). I think clearly that if I had a match, it would have to be a match that would avoid trauma to the head. Luckily, there is a whole lot of me traumatized below the neck. So, yeah, I think I have one last good match in me. All the stars would have to align; it would have to make sense.”
It’s not a “yes”, but Foley said he and MJF made sure not to be photographed together when they met in 2023 or 2024 in order to keep their plans a total secret, so he’s not gonna just tell Helwani they’re building to that for All In next year (or whatever). But again, it is not a “no”.
So I’m thinking the stars will align (provided Mick doesn’t concuss himself early in training again). Then we’ll see how that goes.
