Watch: ‘NCIS’ Season 24 Cast Changes: Wilmer Valderrama Teases Another Possible Character Death

Tony DiNozzo is back on the case.

A decade after Michael Weatherly left NCIS following 13 seasons as the naval crime investigator, the network—which announced in July that he would return to the series—gave a first-look at him back in action for the show’s upcoming 24th season.

As he returns, DiNozzo is as spiffy as he’s always been, donning a navy blue suit with a black-and-green tie and his signature quaffed-back hair, as seen in the first look photos published by Entertainment Weekly Aug. 25. This time around, though, he is sporting a badge that reads “Visitor.”

“When we meet Tony this season, he’s back in Washington expanding his private security company, Salus Mondiale, and finds himself drawn into a case that feels right at home in the NCIS universe,” NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder told EW. “What made his return especially rewarding was exploring how he’s evolved.”

He continued, “He’s still the charismatic, quick-witted DiNozzo fans know and love, but now he’s also a parent navigating life with a daughter, which has given him a little more perspective, maturity, and emotional depth.”

Last year, Weatherly reprised his role for Paramount’s short-lived spinoff Tony & Ziva alongside fellow NCIS alum Cote de Pablo. After the network canceled the series in December, he is set to rejoin the original series alongside his former castmate Sean Murray, as well as Wilmer Valderrama, Gary Cole and Katrina Law.

“Having Michael Weatherly back in the NCIS family is one of those things a writer can only dream about,” Binder explained to EW. “We’re beyond excited to have him return.”

He added, “Tony DiNozzo has always had a way of changing the temperature of every scene he’s in, and watching the newer members of the team encounter the legend they’ve only heard stories about is exactly as fun as it sounds.”

Of course, Weatherly isn’t the only NCIS cast member making his triumphant return to his character. Indeed, after Mark Harmon—who portrayed Leroy Jethro Gibbs for 19 seasons—left the show in 2021, he became an executive producer and narrator for the prequel series NCIS: Origins focused on Gibbs’ early career.

Now, Harmon will star in every episode of the series’ upcoming third season.

“I’m here to help this franchise and this show and these individual actors, who are all great,” he told Entertainment Tonight in November 2025 about returning to the role. “So I’m happy to be here.”
