Watch: Law & Order Kills Off Beloved Character in Shocking Death
In the criminal justice system, some characters become especially beloved.
But that doesn’t mean they’ll always be safe. And in the second episode of Law & Order season 26, which aired on Oct. 15, it was the end of the road for Detective Vincent Riley (Reid Scott).
This is his story.
Riley—who joined the series in season 23—was in pursuit of a suspect while off-duty, meaning he didn’t have his bulletproof vest on. But while he’d tried to contact his partner Walker (David Ajala) for backup, support didn’t get there in time; the suspect shot Riley twice in the chest, and Walker found the detective bleeding onto the street when he arrived.
Though Riley is transported to the hospital, doctors regrettable inform Walker they did everything they could, but that the detective has died.
The rest of the episode is dedicated to getting justice for the late squad member, which means finding the man who killed him and putting him behind bars.
After investigating, the team realizes Riley was pursuing Ray Biller, who had set his sights on Executive Assistant District Attorney Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) for putting Biller’s brother in jail three years earlier. Biller’s brother had just been killed in prison, and Biller had been set on revenge.

Though there are no eyewitnesses to the crime, Walker ultimately decides to bend the truth just a little, amending his statement to say he saw Biller fleeing the scene, and the team is able to land a murder conviction.
The episode ends with a memorial to Riley, as well as a moving tribute from Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) delivered alongside the department’s Wall of Honor.
“Though Vince is no longer with us his courage his humor and his inherent sense of decency will live on through all of us, especially his two beautiful children,” she said through tears. “Vince didn’t pick and choose going to be a hero or when to do the right thing. That’s just who he was and how he was, so in my humble opinion, there’s never been someone more deserving to have his name and legacy memorialized here at the NYPD Wall of Honor.”

Prior to the episode’s release, Law & Order executive producer Rick Eid shared some insight intoRiley’s exit from the series, which had been on the horizon after it was shared that Scott had decided to leave the show.
Calling the episode “very personal,” Eid added in the Sept. 17 interview to TV Insider, “I think it’ll be really emotional and powerful. And the approach was we wanted to give him a memorable exit. He’s a great character.”
While Riley’s death may have broken the hearts of fans, it isn’t the only shocking exit to hit a beloved TV series. Read on for more.
