Judge Judy is putting aside her gavel.

The longtime TV host, whose full name is Judy Sheindlin, announced she’s retiring after more than 30 years presiding over a small claims televised courtroom. Her time onscreen will come to a close when her series Judy Justice airs its final episode in October.

“I have a lot of other things of interest,” Sheindlin explained to People in an interview published Sept. 9. “I don’t want to do hair and makeup anymore, but I still want my message to get out there.”

Which is why the 83-year-old will be producing her son Adam Levy’s forthcoming show Adam’s Law. Also an attorney, Levy will take up his mom’s small claims mantle beginning Sept. 14.

And Sheindlin couldn’t think of a better successor.

“There aren’t a lot of people who can carry a half hour on their own unscripted,” she said. “He has what it takes.”

After all, this isn’t Levy’s first rodeo—or, um, courtroom. Not only did he work as an attorney offscreen—including two terms as District Attorney in New York’s Putnam County—in 2023 he joined Amazon Prime’s Tribunal Justice.

Those three seasons on TV is all Levy needed, as Sheindlin explained, “Maybe eight years ago he wasn’t ready. He’s ready now.”

As for her future, Sheindlin named afternoon naps, extra time spent with family and developing an adult animated series called Judyverse as the activities she’s looking forward to with her extra free time.

And she couldn’t ask for more, telling People, “I don’t think that I’ve ever been this content before.”

After all, while fans may be heartbroken to learn their time of Sheindlin telling people, “Um is not an answer!” is limited, the beloved TV personality has more than left her mark on the airways.

“I don’t have to prove anything else,” Sheindlin said. “I did it.”

And for those who need some of that Sheindlin fire, Adam’s Law will be the perfect substitute. The new series is one of many premiering this fall—read on for more.
