Watch: LeBron James Joins Philadelphia 76ers After Exiting Los Angeles Lakers
Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger just hit a business alley-oop.
After all, the venture capitalist and the former Disney CEO purchased the Los Angeles Lakers in a record-breaking $12 billion deal, multiple outlets confirmed Aug. 12.
“As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers,” Kushner, married to supermodel Karlie Kloss, and Iger said in a statement to ESPN, “One of the most iconic sports franchises in the world.”
The duo emphasized they have “immense respect for the leadership and vision” of the former majority owner Jerry Buss and his daughter Jeanie Buss, who sold their stake to Mark Walter for a reported $10 billion last year. (Jeanie still acts as governor for the team.)
“Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level,” Kushner and Iger continued, “and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.”
Kushner—dad to three kids with Kloss—and Iger’s purchase comes after rumors that the duo was preparing an NBA expansion to Las Vegas, as well as less than a year after Walter himself purchased the team for $10 billion, a then-record-breaking price.
“Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life—an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family,” Walter said in a statement at the time. “I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead.”

This is just the latest shakeup for the Lakers, as longtime star LeBron James announced his departure from the team in June after eight seasons.
“LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history,” Lakers governor Jeanie said in a statement. “We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers—including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold. We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family”
Although James noted he thought he was “done” with basketball at the end of the 2025-2026 season, he ultimately announced his signing with the Philadelphia 76ers July 24.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team,” James said in a post on X at the time, “and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”
