Indie wrestling star opens up about false stabbing incident

Krule has broken his silence about reports later refuted by police that he was stabbed at a wrestling event last month.

Reports of an alleged stabbing attack emerged after Krule, who is a former MLW World Heavyweight Champion and is sometimes known as Mads Krule Krügger, was involved in an altercation with a fan after competing in the main event at Ruthless Pro Wrestling’s OMEGA show in Berwyn, Illinois, on March 28.

A couple of other wrestlers at the event told Cultaholic the fan had stabbed Krule during the scuffle. Indie wrestler Lou Nixon told the outlet Krule said to him that the alleged attacker reacted angrily to him earlier in the night over the price of his merchandise before confronting him prior to the main event.

Another wrestler, Mickie Knuckles, told Cultaholic that the fan became more aggressive with Krule at the merch table following the main event, and eventually violence broke out when the fan came at Krule and allegedly stabbed him in the lower abdomen.

However, the Berwyn Police Department later determined that while an altercation took place between Krule and a fan, a stabbing did not occur at the Ruthless Pro Wrestling event.

The incident, and the debate about what exactly happened, garnered nationwide headlines. Despite the attention, Krule remained silent — until Monday night.

He began his lengthy statement by noting that he had previously tried to write a response about the incident but felt his words were “disingenuous.” After some reflection, he wrote Monday’s statement “not as a character, but as myself.”

Krule then acknowledged throwing a punch at the fan after “several incidents” throughout the night, leading to a bigger physical altercation. He said that it was after the incident while in the locker room that staff noticed he had sustained an injury. Krule added that he cooperated with law enforcement who questioned him about the incident, and he declined to pursue an investigation.

“I told the detective I did not believe I was stabbed, but I had probably fallen on something during the altercation,” Krule wrote.

His statement ended with a long apology in which he accepted “full responsibility for everything that occurred” and said he “failed as a professional” to respond in a more appropriate manner to the issues with the alleged attacker.

The full statement can be read below:

Two weeks ago, I prepared a statement to address this situation. Once I had handled some business that needed to be addressed before releasing, I read what I had written. In doing so I felt how disingenuous my original written statement was. Thus, I decided to stop, reassess, and be more open to the public. I am speaking to all of you now not as a character, but as myself.

During the event, there was an altercation with a fan, whom I had had several incidents with throughout the night, including physically shoving myself during my entrance and another fan who was trying to purchase merchandise after the show. In this moment, I reacted and threw a punch. During that incident, I sustained an injury to my side that once I had returned to the locker room was discovered by staff at Berwyn. I do not know how this injury occurred, only that it occurred during the incident. Staff and wrestlers helped bandage me and tend to the wound. I left and was taken to a shower and driven to the airport, as I had an early flight the next morning for another booking. I awoke in the airport to calls from my family in tears, “Did you get stabbed?” I had no idea what was happening, then I saw that story had been put out on social media. To be absolutely clear, I never wanted nor asked that this story be represented as fact nor made public. I was contacted by law enforcement, and I fully cooperated with that proces. I was asked if I wanted to pursue an investigation, I declined. I told the detective I did not believe I was stabbed, but I had probably fallen on something during the altercation.

I regret not addressing this immediately and allowing misinformation and assumptions to circulate without clarification. I apologize for not negating the claim to the public. I pride myself in blurring the lines of reality, but I understand this was not one of those times.

Now comes the part of all of this I have struggled with the most, throwing a punch. I have been angry, remorseful, and every emotion in-between. However, it finally hit me like a brick wall, I was in the wrong. Regardless of the situation and the things that occurred, it was my job to be a professional. In hindsight, many decisions made different could have changed the situation’s outcome. I could have addressed the situation to management when I knew he was a problem. I could have made the decision not to go sell merch after the show to avoid potential conflict. I could have been a professional and I failed. Thus, I accept full responsibility for everything that occurred. I failed as professional. I have always taken pride in being professional and being a team player with every person I have worked for in my career. I failed and made a bad decision.

To the wrestlers, fans, and promotions that have been affected by the aftermath of the situation and my bad decision, no words can change what has been done but I do apologize. I have spent more time over these last few weeks hurting emotionally because I hurt each and every one of you. I am sorry. Majority of you don’t know me, the person, only as what I portray as a character, but this incident is not a reflection of who I am. I care about professional wrestling more than I’ve shown through this situation. I will reflect that going forward.

The venue that hosted the event where the incident occurred has also been in the news. Not long after the alleged stabbing occurred, the Berwyn Eagles Club announced it would no longer be hosting pro wrestling events after more than two decades of doing so.

The Berwyn Eagles Club did not provide a public explanation for why it will no be in the wrestling business, but the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Berwyn’s city attorney and chief of police said the club’s entertainment license, which is needed for wrestling shows, had not been revoked due to the incident involving Krule.

Last weekend, the club ended its run in wrestling with the All American Wrestling (AAW) event Crush & Destroy on Friday (April 24) and a All Star Lucha Libre show on Saturday.

Seth Rollins, who competed in AAW for years under the name “Tyler Black,” made a surprise appearance at Friday’s show. During an emotional speech, the WWE star thanked fans and put over the venue, saying his “childhood dream wasn’t just to main event WrestleMania, it was to wrestling in rings like this, in places like the Berwyn Eagles Club.“
