Hoda Kotb Shares “Worry” Over 7-Year-Old Daughter Hope’s Diabetes

Hoda Kotb is always thinking about her kids.

In fact, the former Today anchor often finds herself fretting over her daughter Hope‘s health after the 7-year-old was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2023.

“Everyone’s got something,” she said of stress in an interview with USA Today published Sept. 29. “I worry about my youngest daughter, who has diabetes. I am concerned. I go to sleep, I watch my phone all night to see what her numbers are doing. I wake up and see. That’s just constant. That is how it is.”

But the 62-year-old—who is also mom to daughter Haley, 9—has learned to work through the anxiety, including practicing breathwork to “release everything I’m carrying.”

“And now I go back to Hope andHaley, tank full, let’s go,” she continued. “We’re all caring for someone who needs a lot of stuff, or we’re going through life stuff, and I just feel like get on your knees and then go climb the mountain!”

Plus, it’s a comfort to Kotb that she and many others are “a work in progress.”

As she put it, “We’re connected in the broken places.”

Kotb went public with Hope’s diabetes diagnosis last year, explaining that her daughter’s health played a role in her decision to leave Today in 2025 after 17 years.

“You’re constantly watching, you’re constantly monitoring, you’re constantly checking,” Kotb told former co-hosts Craig Melvin and Savannah Guthrie. “Which is what I did all the time when I was [at Today]. You’re distracted.”

And while the Joy 101 founder—who co-parents her kids with ex-fiancé Joel Shiffman—noted that Hope “is fine for most of the day,” she said there are “just moments where you have to watch her.”

“I was totaling it up,” Kotb added. “Five minutes at breakfast, five minutes at lunch, five minutes at dinner, sometimes overnight. Add that up, that’s a half-hour.”
