Christian Parker is one of the biggest names in coaching right now. Whether he proves to be successful is still a question, but all eyes are on the Dallas Cowboys first-year defensive coordinator.
Parker takes over a defense that was atrocious in 2025 under Matt Eberflus, and will face plenty of pressure to improve that unit quickly in 2026. The Cowboys have an elite offense, with all 11 starters returning. The belief is that they will be a contender, as long as Parker makes them relevant on defense.
On Tuesday, Parker’s star got quite the boost as his defense held its own against the Los Angeles Rams. It’s a stretch to say they shut the high-flying Los Angeles offense down, which was never going to happen during a joint practice. Neither team had schemed anything up, so the players were very vanilla. What was important, however, is that the Cowboys weren’t embarrassed. That wasn’t the case in 2025, as the Rams made it look as though they were practicing against air.
Cowboys D-line ready to feast
That practice has once again given hope to Dallas, but others are seeing plenty of positives as well. That includes former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel, who said this defensive line is going to “eat” this year. Daniel claims the combination of the recently extended Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark is the best one-two punch on the interior that the Cowboys have had. He added that Parker will run a multiple defense in the same way his mentor Vic Fangio did, which will allow them to generate pressure without blitzing.
“And that is what a Vic Fangio defense does. They absolutely eat on that defensive line. Even going back to the 49ers years, they’ve always had beasts on that D-line,” Daniel said on ESPN’s NFL Live. “It’s a system that’s pretty simple at its core. But the first thing that Fangio would tell you is they do not want to blitz. And if you have a defensive lineman or defensive line in general that can get pressure on a quarterback without blitzing, it leaves more people in coverage, right?”
How long will it take for the defense to find its stride?
The one question Daniel seemed to have about this defense was just how fast Parker could get his scheme installed and allow the defense to find its rhythm.
That’s a fair question not only because Parker is entering his first year as a defensive play-caller, but more than half of the defensive starters for the Cowboys will be new this season. Thankfully, their offense is good enough to win games even without an elite defense, but if they want to make a true run in the playoffs, this defense has to be firing on all cylinders.
