Druski shared intimate details of his abusive childhood during an interview on Thursday, September 24. The comedian spoke about his violent upbringing in the unfiltered interview, and he also shared intimate details about his life.
Druski Reveals Childhood Trauma During Raw Interview
Druski sat down for an interview with âThe Diary of a CEOâ host Steven Bartlett. In it, he revealed how childhood trauma impacted his life. The comedian, whose real name is Drew Desbordes, got his start by making videos online.
During the interview, the artist said that his mother worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and his father was a pilot for United Airlines (8:06). Druski also said his father got him thinking about what he wanted to do with his life at a young age.
âMy dadâŠ. he was one of those tough guys to deal with around,â (5:27) he said. âHe wanted us to figure it out early, and like my dad was like the lead person of pushing that narrative.â
The artist added that his mother pushed the narrative as well, but she also told his father that Druski was still a child.
âIâm at the time, like eight, nine years old,â he continued. âAnd my dad was like, âWhat do you want to do? Figure it out. Youâre either going to go to jail, you find a, a craft or, or youâre going to end up in a warehouse or something. You got to figure out, um whatever youâre going to do, or you go to the military get your as*s blown off.â And that was the only three options.â
The comedian went on to say that his father was old school and physically abusive. H used to get hit by his father. He added that his fatherâs lessons were good, but the way they were taught were not. Druski also said that he learned from watching neighbors that his upbringing wasnât normal (6:46).Â
âSo, he has a short temper,â he recalled. âHe used to ask these rhetorical questions all the time of like, heâll be like, âGo get me a Phillips screwdriver,â and Iâll go get a regular screwdriver. Heâs like, âThis is not a Phillips screwdriver.â Bam! Upside the head. Then my brother goes, âheâs like I want you to go get me a Phillips screwdriver.â My brother goes and get a hammer. The dumbest sh*t, right? And he would come back and Bam! Upside the head.âÂ
He Used Comedy To Cope With The Abuse
Druski added that he began to use comedy to cope with the abuse. Furthermore, he used it as a tool to comfort his brother (8:47).
âWe had some a*s whoopers in the house that went too far,â he said. âUm, but yeah, I think I, I, I feel like my comedy comes from that place of I never tend to punch down. I like to find the funny, but also the good side of funny, and not look at the negative for my type of comedy.â
The 32-year-old also said that his brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and Druski used comedy as a coping mechanism for his brother, as well as his mother, to deal with the abuse (10:30).Â
âOne time I watched my brother get beat for wetting the bed and it was the simplest thing and I couldnât understand. I was like âwhy is he like like getting beat this bad?â
âIâve seen different things of like the choking and, you know, pushing her out the door and then locking the door,â he added. âAnd then I got to go and be the one staring at her at the door and sheâs like, âOpen it.â And heâs like, âYou better not open that door.’â
Druski Speaks On Leaving College And Depression
Druski went to community college in Gwinnett County for a year and a half before transferring to Georgia Southern University (22:25). He said that during that time, he became isolated and depressed, and he began to skip his classes.
âAt the time, I wasnât thinking, âOh, I want to be a superstar.â I was just thinking I wanted a real college experience,â he said. âI went into like a deep depressionâŠ. I felt like almost very for the first time in my life very depressed and that kind of bothered me because I started to just not even go to classes anymore at this new school.â
âI kind of didnât want to go home,â he continued. âIâm not going to go back. But also like, what am I doing here? Iâm not doing anything here either. What is my purpose in life?â So, sitting in there and being depressed and sad and looking at myself in the mirror, I started to figure out, Iâm like, âd*mn, what do I really want to do in life? Does any of this really make sense? Itâs like Iâm here for sports journalism, but do I want I know I want to be on TV.’âÂ
Druski added that he began watching comedy videos of comedians Steve Harvey, Will Ferrell, and late âSaturday Night Liveâ star Chris Farley. The funnyman added that he realized his lifeâs purpose during that time. He dropped out of school, and after his car got repossessed, he began making his comedy videos (0:52)
âI think since Iâve always been the funny guy in every classroom,â he added. âEverything Iâve done, sports, I get kicked off the football team for being funny, all this stuff is because I am a comedian.â
âI wrote all these goals down on the sheet of paper. Now, Iâm locked in I have no other option. Iâm sitting here in a room, no mattress. My car got repossessed. I actually made that like a content piece. But I feared nothing because Iâm like, I have nothing left.â
