Dr. Anthony Fauci refused to answer questions on Capitol Hill Wednesday, but the humiliating release of his secret COVID-era diary just days before had already provided all the answers we needed about his demented ego and matchless mendacity.
Fauci short-circuited fireworks at the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing, run by his arch nemesis, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., by pleading the Fifth Amendment 111 times, even though he has a full pardon from the autopen of former President Joe Biden. But we had already heard plenty from him, thanks to the diary that was discovered on Fauci’s government computer.
In early May 2020, we see Fauci musing that the “situation with my national and international fame is explosive and really unimaginable,” adding that he might be “the most famous and talked about person in the country and one of the most recognizable persons in the world.”

As a one-off, this entry might not be alarming, but in fact, the whole mini-memoir is filled with celebrities like Julia Roberts and CNN anchor Jake Tapper singing his praises in private, arranging A-list Zoom calls for Fauci, and generally venerating him as the greatest scientist on Earth.
It’s an assessment he no doubt concurred with. After all, this is the man who once announced, when questioned over COVID lockdowns, “I am the science!”
According to Michael Caputo, who was the communications director for the Department of Health and Human Services, and who Fauci curses in his diary, “The very first time we discussed his TV appearances, Dr. Fauci waved all the red flags of a media hound. On my first day, he was already described as a problem.”

It was this level of ego that allowed Fauci to write in his private diary on January 26, 2020, that “now we know the [wet] market was not the source, it was the amplifier,” and the very next day say on television to the American people that the Coronavirus came from, you guessed it, wet markets. It had always strained credulity to believe that the deadly pathogen originated not in the mysterious laboratory where bat viruses were studied, but in a food market a stone’s throw away. Now we know Fauci never bought the idea either. But he sure sold it.
Again and again, in his own words, we learn that privately he had serious doubts about not only the origin of COVID, but also the efficacy of masking, social distancing and the whole horrid host of shutdown measures that crushed our nation, while publicly insisting we must obey or we’d be killing grandma.
Fauci’s greatest sin, and what must now be his legacy, was his insistence on withholding information from the American people, and sometimes just flat-out lying, in order to make us behave as he thought we should.
Fauci and the Covidians had no desire for debate. In fact, they tried to destroy the careers of those who dared to question them.
The megalomaniacal picture of Fauci, in his own words, can be nothing short of infuriating for every American who suffered the indignity and often harrowing sorrow of isolation, all while he fought to silence scientists like Dr. Scott Atlas, who warned about the harm Saint Fauci was causing.
We must never forget how deranged Fauci followers, including governors such as Andrew Cuomo of New York and Gavin Newsom of California, became during this period, as kids lost years of learning through school closings.
Of course, they will all say, “We were just following the best science we had at the time.” But let’s be honest: They wanted to put mask resisters in camps. They blew up schoolkids’ lives. They didn’t let you be with dying parents or have weddings. You couldn’t sing in the church choir. They tackled and arrested lone surfers on the beach. They made high school track athletes and band members wear masks while performing.
Those who bought into the hysteria and enforced the mad rules must forever be reminded of where they stood during that time, because otherwise it will happen again.
On Wednesday, a sad and defeated Fauci, far from the demigod of COVID times, sat stonefaced as Paul listed his lies. After each question, the disgraced doctor simply muttered, “On the advice of counsel I am invoking the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution.”
For maybe the first time in his career, Fauci, who can spot a blinking red light at 200 paces, had nothing to say.
The bad news for Fauci is that his celebrity friends and loyal sycophants in the news media aren’t rallying around their former saint. It is far too late for that now. The best they can do is to just ignore it, pretending none of this is even happening.
For those of us who suffered under the iron fist of Fauci’s fallacious reign, and let’s be honest that is everyone, there can be no forgiving or forgetting, only a deep, sharp anger.
Few, if any of us, will ever know what it is like to be heralded as a hero, as the sole voice of reason and science, for half of the country, to be worshiped with votive candles, and slobbered over by late-night “comedians.”
We can’t know what that would do to us. But, we do know what it did to Dr. Anthony Fauci. It turned him into an abject monster.
