Watch: Shane Gillis Apologizes After Dropping F-Bomb During ‘Saturday Night Live’ Appearance
Dan Levy thinks this joke was a big mistake.
After Shane Gillis called women wh–es for wearing short shorts to the gym during his monologue as host of Saturday Night Live on Oct. 10, Levy didn’t mince words while criticizing the comedian for the quip.
“Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them wh–es,” the Schitt’s Creek alum said in a video shared to Instagram Oct. 11. “It makes the men calling them wh–es misogynists. There’s a difference there.”
He added, “By the way, I’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym than I’ve ever seen women showing their bodies off, but I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television.”
But exist it did. During his monologue, Gillis admitted he was sometimes intimidated going to the gym in New York City, before turning his attention to women he’s seen at the gym.
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long. I didn’t know women just dressed like wh–es now,” he said during the episode. “Look, I’m sorry. There’s no other way to describe—have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?”
He continued, “Those neon—they’re like artificial bait colored. And the wrinkles go like around the cheeks and all combined at the butthole. And don’t look. You’re not allowed to look. For real don’t look because they are filming.”
E! News has reached out to Gillis’ team but did not receive comment.

For Levy, the comments went beyond a joke.
“To be perfectly honest, more men need to be standing up in opposition to it,” he said, “because it’s complacency that has created the environment with which women are sexually assaulted, and it’s a conversation as opposed to a crime. Men need to be defending women more. This is not a women’s issue. This is an everybody issue.”
“Because the more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects,” he explained. “They are not objects. They are superior human beings to men. Okay, and I’m sorry if this gets me in trouble with the internet, but f–k!”
As for getting him in trouble, the Good Grief actor’s comment section was soon filled with support and gratitude from celebrities and fans alike.
“We stan Dan. Thank you,” wrote Sophia Bush, while her One Tree Hill costar Hilarie Burton added, “Thank you!!!!”
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Banks wrote, “Nailed it.”
While Levy didn’t hesitate to call Gillis out for his choice of words, he’s not the only star to publicly share his frustrations with a fellow celebrity. Read on for insight into full-fledged feuds that have captured the attention of Hollywood over the years.
