Alberto Rodríguez, better known as Alberto Del Rio during his time in WWE and Alberto El Patrón elsewhere, was formally charged with domestic violence before being granted his conditional release on Saturday after agreeing to pay a financial settlement to his wife.
Del Rio, 48, was arrested last Monday (April 6) by police in Mexico on allegations of domestic violence against his spouse. Multiple Mexican news outlets reported that Alberto’s wife called 911 on him before filing a complaint that alleged he beat her.
The sports website La Afición wrote that responding officers reported injuries visible on the face and arms of Alberto’s wife when they arrested the wrestler.

After being detained by State Civil Guard officers, Del Rio was turned over to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of San Luis Potosí (FGE) to face charges. The attorney general’s office later released a statement that said the case would be overseen by a prosecutor’s office that specializes in cases involving women, families, and sex offenses.
The statement from the attorney general’s office added that the victim said an argument broke out between her and her husband, identified only as Alberto ’N’ by the office, which “led the defendant to commit various acts of physical and verbal abuse against his partner.”
Del Rio has faced serious allegations of violence against women in the past. In a 2020 interview, his former girlfriend Saraya Bevis (aka Paige in WWE) spoke about being the victim of physical abuse without naming Alberto, but he responded to TMZ by claimingthat she had been the abuser in their relationship.
Also in 2020, Alberto was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting and beating another former partner. He was later indicated by a grand jury and charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault, but those charges were dropped when a witness in the case went missing before the trial.
Del Rio has denied the previous allegations against him.
According to the newspaper El Mañana SLP, the April 11 hearing for Del Rio at the Comprehensive Criminal Justice Center of La Pila lasted more than three hours.
Although Judge Paulo César Ramiro Zúñiga determined there was sufficient evidence to formally charge Del Rio and move forward to a trial due to repeated family violence, the judge granted an alternative resolution requested by the defense.
According to the agreement, Del Rio must pay 1,130,000 pesos as reparation and for the granting of legal forgiveness by the victim. (That peso amount converts to approximately $65,000.)
As a requirement for his release, Del Rio must also meet various conditions for the next six months. The news outlet SDP Noticias reported that those measures include attending rehabilitation therapy for aggressors and avoiding any contact with the victim.

While Del Rio managed to win the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship twice each during his time in WWE, he reportedly departed the company on less-than-amicable terms in 2016.
Since his release from WWE, Alberto has primarily wrestled in Mexico in recent years. When WWE bought AAA last year, he was the reigning AAA Mega Champion, leading to speculation that he may turn up again in storylines for his former employer. However, he never appeared on WWE programming and hasn’t been seen in AAA since the summer of 2025.
Following his arrest last week, The Crash Lucha Libre promotion announced it had suspended Alberto indefinitely.
“The Crash Lucha Libre is a company with values that promotes the sport in a family-friendly way, and condemns all acts of violence outside of sports, for this reason we will suspend Alberto Del Rio ‘El Patrón’ from our programming after the events that recently occurred,” the promotion said in a statement.
