Watch: ‘Chicago Fire,’ ‘Med’ & ‘P.D.’ Stars Tease New Faces Amid Major Cast Shakeups
Officer Kevin Atwater has officially turned in his badge.
After starring on Chicago P.D. for over a decade, original cast member LaRoyce Hawkins bid farewell to the Windy City during the police drama’s Oct. 14 episode.
The season 14 episode, titled “Don’t Blink” and directed by P.D. alum Jesse Lee Soffer, saw Atwater ultimately deciding to leave the force after welcoming a baby boy with Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom). After all, he had an important moment of clarity leading up to the move.
While in the line of duty, Atwater is shot at by a suspect during a dangerous chase. While a bulletproof vest saves his life, the close call was enough to convince the cop to put fatherhood before crime-fighting.
Ultimately, he accepts a position teaching at the police academy in Atlanta, where he could safely relocate with his family.
During his send-off, Atwater shared his appreciation after 14 years on the force.
“I look around this room, and the only word that comes to mind is gratitude,” he said. “The Chicago police department will always be part of my heart, you are all my family. For the past 14 years, the 21st district has been my home.”
Atwater continued, “But raise a drink because I went ahead and made a new family, and it’s time we find a new home. From the heart, thank you.”
While the farewell certainly leaves the door open for Atwater—and Hawkins—to potentially return in the future, the exit marks a palpable new era for the show’s cast and crew.
“We really wanted to give the best sendoff that we could,” showrunner Gwen Sigan told TV Insider earlier this month. “Of course, you want it to be very natural for the character. You want it to feel organic. We wanted this to feel like something that hopefully isn’t just coming out of left field, that we could take little pieces that maybe were already embedded and just try our best to make it feel as real and authentic for him as possible.”

In the end, Sigan wanted Atwater’s exit to be “positive” and “optimistic.”
As she added, “Make it something that for his character could be a choice and that he could almost author it and we could bake it into the episode in a way that felt like, ‘Okay, we’re giving this character something that maybe he’s been longing for or wanting for a long time and hasn’t admitted to.’ And so it felt like we got there.”
Of course, Hawkins isn’t alone. Keep reading to see more TV stars who shocked fans by leaving their hit shows.
