“I’m a different flower in another part of the garden. And I’ll do something else that won’t be the same.” 🌸 Copper Pot Pictures revealed a trailer for a documentary film titled Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There, a biopic look back at the life and career of animation legend Don Bluth. This is releasing to watch on VOD starting in November coming soon. Don Bluth is the visionary behind the films An American Tail, The Land Before Time, The Secret of NIMH, and Anastasia, and the video game Dragon’s Lair. Weaving intimate conversations with hundreds of hours of never-before-seen archival & home video, this film draws a compelling portrait of an artist who spent his life battling his own ego and a career torn between art and commerce all in pursuit of fulfilling his dream. Bluth led an early exodus from Disney in the 1980s (after The Fox and the Hound), battling the titan for animation’s soul by creating his own work. The film shows his internal war between art, ego and faith. I’m a fan of Don Bluth and love the tell-all stories where people explain what really happened to them, how they feel, and how they’ve grown over time. Looks great! I’m in.
Here’s the trailer for LaMattina & Walker’s doc Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There, from YouTube:

Before he defined childhood nostalgia and arcade history with Dragon’s Lair, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Anastasia, Don Bluth did the unthinkable: he walked away from Disney to wage an independent war for the soul of traditional animation. Weaving intimate modern conversations with hundreds of hours of never-before-seen personal archives, Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There reveals the unvarnished story of a master craftsman caught between art and commerce, ego and faith, and the cost of building an empire on his own terms. Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There is a documentary co-directed by filmmakers Dave LaMattina & Chad N. Walker, both directors of the films Brownstones to Red Dirt, I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story, We Must Go, La Gran Madre, and Summer of 94 previously. Produced by Dave LaMattina. This initially premiered at the 2026 SCAD Savannah Film Festival as part of the Don Bluth Collection at SCAD. Copper Pot Pictures debuts Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There direct-to-VOD starting on November 20th, 2026 this fall. For updates visit the official site. Who wants to watch?
