Jinger Duggaris sharing how she dealt with a difficult time in her life.Â
The 19 Kids and Counting alum opened up about how she struggled with an eating disorder as a teen due to constant stress, but explained how her mom Michelle Duggar ultimately helped her heal.
âI had so much stress in my body that I almost physically was feeling sick,â Jinger told sister JoyDuggar on the Oct. 14 episode of their Call Your Sister podcast. âThere was so much that I was processing through and I was really stressed.â
Jingerâwho shares kids Felicity, 8, Evangeline, 6, and Finnegan, 18 months, with husband JeremyVuoloâexplained that her eating disorder manifested in food avoidance.
âI would try to sleep in as late as I could, so I would not have to eat breakfast,â she said, âand Iâd try to make it through lunch and then try to not eat lunch.â
The 32-year-old added that it was easy to hide the fact that she was skipping meals, not due to familial neglect, but because of the way the Duggar family had set up meal times.Â
âWe would eat dinner, more dinners together as a family than we would lunch and breakfast,â Jinger said. âSo I think that I was slipping through the cracks in a sense.â
Jinger finally reached a breakthrough when she was on a group trip and saw someone who was struggling with bulimia.Â

âShe was literally sickly and she had so many health issues and she looked terrible because her body was withering away. She was in a terrible place,â Jinger recalled. âUltimately I was looking at her and I’m like, âJust stop doing that,â as I’m over here doing the same thing in a different way.â
Once she had the realization, she confided in her mother Michelle, Â who met her âwith such grace and kindness,” sharing that she had struggled with an eating disorder in her younger years.Â
âShe said, âBut good thing is you’re talking, you’re going to be fine.â I was so reassured knowing that because I said that, she was not like, âOh my goodness, hereâs three cheeseburgers, eat them all,’â Jinger explained. âShe was like, âNo, itâs OK. You can eat healthy food and be healthy.â But she also said, âYou donât need to avoid food because thatâs gonna harm your body later.ââ

Michelle helped her daughter get on âan accountability track,â giving her a cellphone so she and Jinger could message back and forth about what she was eating.Â
Still, thatâs not to say getting to a good place didnât take time.Â
âIt was hard in those years,â Jinger admitted, âbecause I had to mentally get to a place where I was like, âOK, I am not gonna focus on that. I wanna focus on having a healthy relationship with food.ââ
Overall, Jinger looks back on the stress as part of being âin those teenage years.â
âIt was not healthy,â she said. âI was in a terrible place in my mind thinking of how I viewed myself.â
