The little-known Finnair tricks for a more affordable winter getaway

The little-known Finnair tricks for a more affordable winter getaway

From flying to Lapland for no additional Avios, to using them to pay for ski passes once there, IAG Loyalty – the organisation behind global reward currency Avios – and Finnair, have revealed some of the lesser-known ways UK travellers can make their Avios go further with the national carrier of Finland.

While UK collectors may be most familiar with using Avios through The British Airways Club, Finnair is one of seven global airlines that use Avios as their loyalty currency. Avios can be transferred free of charge between The British Airways Club and Finnair Plus – opening up a range of lesser-known ways to spend them.

With winter holiday planning underway and the countdown to Christmas on, these little-known Avios hacks could help travellers make their balance work harder on an upcoming getaway:

An onward flight for no extra Avios (including to Lapland)
Those planning a winter escape could make their Avios stretch further than they might expect. When booking an Avios redemption with Finnair between the UK and Helsinki, members can add an onward connection to eligible destinations across the Nordics, Baltics and Northern Europe for no additional Avios.

That means travellers can continue beyond Helsinki to destinations including Finnish Lapland while paying the same number of Avios as the UK to Helsinki leg – leaving more of their balance for their next trip.

With one-way flights from the UK to Helsinki starting at just 12,000 Avios in Economy, plus taxes and charges, this means Brits could secure flights to destinations such as Rovaniemi – The Official Hometown of Santa Claus – for the same Avios price, with the onward connection from Helsinki included. Besides Rovaniemi, Finnair offers year-round connections from Helsinki to Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo, with flights from the UK to Helsinki available from London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Hit the slopes with Avios
The savings don’t have to stop when the plane lands. Thanks to a unique partnership between Finnair and Levi Ski Resort in Finnish Lapland, Brits can also use their Avios to cover the cost of winter sports for all the family.

As the first airline and ski resort to partner with the option to pay with Avios, travellers can choose to redeem Avios on ski passes, equipment rental and other activities at Levi – helping to make a traditionally expensive activity more accessible.

Hotels, restaurants and car hire
Thanks to Finnair Shop, the online store for Finnair Plus loyalty programme members, Avios can also be redeemed on hotel stays, car hire and restaurant vouchers, helping Brits make loyalty work harder for them while reducing the cost of trips to Finland and beyond.

Travellers can sign-up for Finnair Plus for free here. Once created, members can begin collecting Avios with Finnair Plus, or after 30 days link their account with another programme such as The British Airways Club via Avios.com. Avios can then be transferred between programmes free of charge.
