Watch: ‘Girls’ Is Returning to HBO with Lena Dunham, Original Cast: All the Details
Let’s celebrate the girls who took a risk and put herself out there creatively
After all, Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet will be reprising their roles in five-episode revival of the HBO show.
“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” Dunham, who also created the series, shared in an Oct. 13 press release. “I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day.”
The actress said the comedy’s iconic characters—Hannah Horvath (Dunham), Marnie Michaels (Williams), Jessa Johansson (Kirke) and Shoshanna Shapiro (Mamet) as well as Andrew Rannells’ Elijah Krantz “started talking to me in the shower” around her 40th birthday in May.
“And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop,” Dunham continued. “It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding.”
To mark the occasion, Dunham and her former castmates reunited in an Oct. 13 video announcing the revival.
“Would you want to do Girls again next summer?” Dunham asked the group in the clip, to which Rannells jokingly replied, “I’m in, but only because you trash cans need constant supervision.”
Production on the revival will start in 2027, 10 years after Girls‘ five-season run ended with Dunham’s character moving out of New York City and giving birth to a baby boy named Grover.

And since the finale, Dunham’s real life has also seen plenty of changes. In addition to breaking off her professional relationship with Girls producer Jenni Konner in 2018, she married musician Luis Felber in 2021 and welcomed their first baby together, a girl, earlier this year.
She also recounted her time creating the voice of her generation—or at least a voice of a generation—in her memoir Famesick. In it, she doesn’t shy away from the ups and downs she had making the HBO hit, including costar Adam Driver‘s alleged “feral” outbursts on set.
“Adam screamed, ‘F–KING SAY SOMETHING’ and hurled a chair at the wall next to me,’” wrote Dunham, who at the time was dealing with dissociation as part of her undiagnosed endometriosis. “‘WAKE THE F–K UP,’ he told me. ‘I’M SICK OF WATCHING YOU JUST STARE.’”
In response to the claim, Driver—who played Dunham’s onscreen boyfriend—said, “I have no comment on any of that. I’m saving it all for my book.”
