Tommy Lee Jones, 80, Makes Ultra Rare Red Carpet Appearance

Watch: John Goodman Makes Rare Outing With Wife Anna Beth Goodman

Tommy Lee Jones is ready to give fans the lowdown.

The Oscar-winning actor made a rare appearance on the red carpet Oct. 7 for the season two premiere of FX’s The Lowdown at AFS Cinema in Austin, nearly three years after he last appeared on the red carpet for the premiere of Finestkind in December 2023.

Jones kept it casual for the outing, donning blue jeans and a blue button up shirt with a black blazer. He was joined in the carpet by costars Ethan Hawke and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, as well as the show’s creator SterlinHarjo.

The 80-year-old is set to appear on two episodes of The Lowdown—premiering Oct. 14—as the estranged father of Hawke’s character Lee Raybon, a bookstore owner in Tulsa, Okla., who moonlights as a journalist to uncover the grim truths about local corruption.

And Hawke and Harjo knew that Jones would be perfect for the role.

Tommy Lee Jones’ Daughter Victoria Jones’ Cause of Death Revealed

“We’re just kind of going about who would be a great formidable figure in Lee Raybond’s life and Tommy Lee popped up in our mind,” he shared with TV Insider in September. “Then we couldn’t get him out and he was a fan of The Lowdown.”

Plus, having the chance to work with Jones was an opportunity that Hawke could not pass up.

“I have been a huge fan of his my whole life,” he added. “From Coal Miner’s Daughter through Lonesome Dove, I’m the perfect age for him. The Fugitive, No Country for Old Men, he’s one of the all-time greats. And it was a real privilege to work with him.”

During his time out of the spotlight, Jones has been navigating challenges at home. His latest appearance comes less than a year after his 34-year-old daughter Victoria Jones was found dead in a San Francisco hotel room on Jan. 1, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in San Francisco determining her death to be an “accident,” caused by the “toxic effects of cocaine.”

Shortly after her passing, the Men in Black star—who is also dad to son Austin, 43, with ex-wife KimberleaCloughley—shared a statement on behalf of his family, telling E! News, “We appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time.”
