“I am an observer at heart – the miniature world in my viewfinder is constantly fascinating to me.” Mubi has unveiled the trailer for the documentary film Making Marie Antoinette, an enchanting making of doc looking back at the creation and filming of the cult classic film Marie Antoinette from 2006. This is a remarkably intimate & incredible doc because it’s made by Sofia Coppola’s mother, Eleanor Coppola. She originally watched her daughter filming on set and ended up with over 80 hours of footage from the shoot at Versailles in early 2005. They started working on the putting together the footage & creating this doc during the early pandemic. Eleanor then passed away in 2024, so Sofia decided to finish the film and now it’s ready. And it’s just lovely – read our full review here. The moments with Jason Schwartzman are some of my faves. Eleanor Coppola turns her camera on her daughter, Sofia, while she films Marie Antoinette at 34. Making Marie Antoinette is an access-all-areas invitation behind the scenes of her often misunderstood masterpiece and the making of an auteur through the eyes of her mother. This doc and a 4K re-release of the original Marie Antoinette film premiere in theaters this month to watch on the big screen. Is it one of your favorites?

And a brand new trailer for the 4K re-release of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette film, also on YouTube:

From NYFF: “Polarizing upon release, Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette is now, 20 years later, widely embraced as a 21st-century cinematic cornerstone and a distilled expression of its director’s recurring themes of celebrity, wealth, and isolation. For the first time, Coppola’s dynamic craftsmanship in creating her personal vision for the brief life of the 18th-century queen (Kirsten Dunst) in the years leading up to the French Revolution is on full display in this diary shot by her mother, filmmaker Eleanor Coppola, on the film’s set in Versailles in 2005. From almost 80 hours of video, Eleanor began to assemble the footage during the pandemic lockdown, and Sofia helped finish editing it after Eleanor’s death in 2024. Narrated by Diane Lane, reciting Eleanor’s journals from the time, this is a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse that is both process-oriented and touchingly personal.” For more info on the doc release, visit Mubi’s official site.
Making Marie Antoinette is directed by American filmmaker Eleanor Coppola (RIP), director of Paris Can Wait and Love Is Love Is Love previously, who filmed on many of Francis Ford Coppola’s sets for years as well. Produced by Sofia Coppola, Rachel Dengiz, Mario Gianani, Youree Henley, Lorenzo Mieli. Originally filmed on the Marie Antoinette set at Versailles in 2005. This doc premiered at the 2026 Telluride & New York Film Festivals this fall. Mubi debuts the Coppola’s Making Marie Antoinette film in select US theaters starting October 23rd, 2026 this fall. The original will also be re-released in theaters on October 23rd.
