Watch: Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan Addresses Kevin Costner’s Exit Amid Feud Rumors
Luke Grimes left it all on the ranch.
And that includes the Yellowstone alumâs conversations with his onscreen dad Kevin Costner, who he hasnât been in touch with since the Oscar winnerâs character John Dutton was killed off in the fifth and final season in 2024.
âI have never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together,â Grimes told USA Today in an interview published Oct. 5. âNot for any other reason other than we are both just busy guys and life moves on.â
Still, the 42-year-oldâwho is currently reprising his role as Kayce Dutton on the Yellowstone spinoff series Marshalsâsaid it âwould be coolâ to have Costner return to the franchise in a flashback scene, though he noted, âI doubt that will happen at this point.â
Plus, Grimes shared that it might make more sense to have Kelsey Asbille reprise her role of Kayceâs wife Monica Dutton after the character was written out of the show.Â
âIf there was a flashback, Iâd probably rather it be with Monica than John,â he explained. âI think that would be more poignant to the character, but we will see.â
Following Costnerâs controversial departure from Yellowstone amid scheduling issues, series creator Taylor Sheridan clarified that the Bodyguard actor actually stuck around longer than expected.Â
Paramount
âKevin was only supposed to be in the first three seasons,â Sheridan said during a June episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast. âThat was in his contract.â
However, the showrunner noted that Paramount was âso scaredâ of not having Costner in the popular series, even though âKevin was ready to go.â
âHe had other things he wanted to do,â Sheridan added. âBut he stayed on for another two seasons.â
Indeed, Costner went on to write and direct his Horizon: An American Saga film series, which premiered in 2024. And despite his exit, he still holds appreciation for his time on Yellowstone.
âIt was something that really changed me,” Costner said on Instagram in 2024. âI loved it, and I know you loved it.â
