Watch: Why Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley Takes Responsibility for Nina Dobrev Feud
Sebastian Stan isn’t feeling batty over his decision to turn down The Vampire Diaries.
In fact, the Marvel actor feels relieved in having passed on the role of Stefan Salvatore, which eventually went to Paul Wesley in the CW teen drama that ran for eight seasons from 2009 to 2017.
“They offered me Paul Wesley’s role,” Stan recalled on the Oct. 5 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “And I had just come off Kings and I sort of felt really burnt out from that not working out and just sort of the idea of thinking, ‘Oh, I’m just going to sign up again for something that probably is not going to get to the second season.'”
Fresh off from his starring role in the 2006’s The Covenant, Stan also didn’t want to be boxed into “that supernatural world” at the time.
“And then the show went on to be super successful,” the 44-year-old quipped of The Vampire Diaries, before explaining that he has no regrets in his decision. “Now looking back, I feel grateful in a way ’cause I don’t know if I was really ready for that kind of exposure when I was younger, to be honest.”
“Emotionally and mentally, I know what I went through in those years and my focus was all over the place,” he continued. “Maybe that’s just ’cause it worked out the way it did and this is my story, but I’m definitely in a place right now where I wouldn’t change anything.”
Describing himself as “a late bloomer in a lot of ways,” Stan added, “That’s why timing is such a big thing.”
But Wesley, now 44, wasn’t the only Vampire Diaries star who almost lost their role to Stan. According to the show’s casting director Lesli Gelles-Raymond, producers had also considered him to play Damon Salvatore, who was ultimately portrayed by Ian Somerhalder.

“For a while, their dream cast would’ve been Steven Strait [for Stefan] and Sebastian Stan [for Damon],” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2025. “But Sebastian was on Kings, so that wasn’t going to work out.”
In fact, The Vampire Diaries co-creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson admitted that didn’t feel Wesley could be a “heartthrob” who could lead the series.
“We were sort of pressured into casting Paul Wesley against our desires, which of course means everybody knew way better than us and that we almost missed out on the most perfect piece of casting,” she told the outlet. “There was no denial that Paul could act the part, we just didn’t see him lighting up the screen, but we were just dead wrong.”
And Wesley credits the show’s casting department for being in his corner. As he recounted with a laugh, “Lesli was like, ‘Just see him one more time!’ And they were like, “OK, we’ll see Paul Wesley again, ugh, whatever. We’re over this kid.'”
