Watch: Anne Hathaway Jokes She’ll Call “Hot Ones” Host Sean Evans If Baby Is Overdue
Anne Hathaway has a mother’s instinct.
That’s why the Oscar winner—who is currently expecting her third baby with husband Adam Shulman—took her doctor’s orders seriously when she was told not to participate in Sean Evans’ Hot Ones series, where celebrity guests taste chicken wings with increasing spice levels.
“Spicy foods impacted me in the past, let’s just say that,” Hathaway exclusively told E! News at the Verity premiere in New York City Sept. 29. “And so it kind of seemed like the right thing to do. Why take any unnecessary chances?”
However, the 43-year-old is keeping the talk show host’s phone number handy should her baby need an extra push. As she put it, “But if the baby is overdue, I might be giving Sean a call.”
While Hathaway’s character in the new movie Verity, in theaters Oct. 2, made a fake appearance on the Evans-hosted talk series, the Oscar winner recently revealed that she didn’t actually get to try the challenge IRL due to her pregnancy.
“I thought that I was gonna be able to do the Hot Ones challenge to do press for this film because it just made sense,” Hathaway—who plays bestselling author Verity Crawford in the Colleen Hoover adaptation—told Talk Of The Townsends in an interview posted to Instagram Sept. 25. “But then I got pregnant and my doctor said I couldn’t do it because I might go into early labor.”
Though she was able to eat a few of the actual wings while filming Verity, the Odyssey star has yet to fully complete Hot Ones’ spicy chicken challenge.
“I still haven’t done the gauntlet yet. I’m not sure when that’s gonna happen,” she shared. “Maybe next year.”

And while Hathaway—mom to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6, with Shulman—made it clear she won’t be undergoing the eating challenge on this press tour, it’s been special getting to face the media frenzy with one costar in particular: Dakota Johnson.
“I love her,” Hathaway—who also stars alongside Josh Hartnett and Ismael Cruz Córdova in the thriller—told E! News. “She’s the most adorable, amazing, surprising person.”
“It’s not even that she marches to the beat of her own drummer,” she added. “It’s like she’s hearing the coolest music ever and you’re just like I just want to hear the music that you’re hearing. She’s so real, she’s so fantastic and I’m just so happy that we became friends.”
