Watch: Lil Nas X Shares Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis Nearly One Year After Arrest, Rehab Stay
Jeff Garlin is getting candid about a difficult period in his life.Â
Almost five years after complaints about his behavior and an HR investigation led to his departure from The Goldbergs, the Emmy nominee looked back at the tumultuous period, admitting how his conduct affected those around himâespecially his on-screen wife played Wendi McLendon-Covey.Â
âI actually empathize with her because, at the time, I was undiagnosed bipolar,â Garlin shared on the Sept. 18 episode of The Daily Beastâs Obsessed podcast. âI was miserable on the show and I was miserable with my performance.â
âShe was always trying to tell me, âHey, youâre really great on the show.â I didnât believe her,â he said. âI just got to the point where I had to quit, and she was very resentful.â
But he admitted that saying goodbye to the series in late 2021 after starring on it for nine seasons âwas a bit dramatic,â though the 64-year-old emphasized that he could âonly speak to what Iâm responsible forâ after being diagnosed as bipolar towards the end of his time on the ABC sitcom.
âBeing bipolar, I was either one of three things,â Garlin explained. âDark, dark, dark, dark, didnât talk and look at anyone. Happy to the point of maniaânever turning off my thing. Or mean. Really, really mean.âÂ
As for his relationship with McLendon-Covey after he left the series? The Curb Your Enthusiasm alumâwhose character Murray Goldberg was confirmed to have died in the premiere of the 10th and final seasonâadded that he believed she was âresentful and angry at me.â

âIf she wanted to continue the resentment, that’s her. To me, I don’t have resentment towards her even saying things about me,â he said. âI actually love her and I appreciate that she’s one of the greatest actors I’ve ever worked with. That will not be lost on me.â
Following his admission, McLendon-Coveyâwhoâd called his Goldbergs exit âa long time comingâ in 2023âshared her current thoughts on the matter, commenting on The Daily Beastâs Sept. 20 Instagram post about Garlinâs comments.Â
âHuh,â the Bridesmaids actress wrote, adding in a follow-up comment, âLetâs just say I remember things very differently.â
She went on to suggest that others who worked on the show would agree with her.

For now, Garlin is focused on managing his diagnosis with the help of medication and dialectical behavior therapy, although he does feel bad about his behavior before his diagnosis.Â
âI have regrets,â he admitted. âNot a lot of them I could have controlled, but I still have regrets on a lot of my behavior in terms of being a jerk.â
Still, the comedianwas adamant that these days, heâs âa different person,â or at least a âmore enlightenedâ one.Â
