Mormon Wives’ Layla Taylor Says Free Plastic Surgery Led to Hernia

Watch: Mormon Wives’ Layla Taylor Seemingly Confirms Girlfriend’s Identity After Coming Out as Bisexual

For Layla Taylor, hindsight really is 20/20.

At 25 years old, and with the wealth and renown of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives behind her, she now knows better than to say yes to free plastic surgery. But earlier in her life, there was a time that she did go under the knife at no cost—and she’s warning other people away from doing the same.

“I learned my lesson the hard way,” she told Amanda Hirsch during her appearance on the Aug. 5 episode of Hulu’s Get Real. “The things that I’ve gotten repaired now. So, I’ve got my boobs redone now—second boob job. First surgery I got was for free. And then the tummy tuck as well was for free.”

As for why she learned the “hard way,” not only did Layla have to get her boobs redone, but her initial tummy tuck—which she got two years ago after welcoming kids Oliver, 5, and Maxwell, 4, with her ex-husband Clayton Wessel—also led to the development of a hernia near her bellybutton.

“Unfortunately, the doctor I went to the first time didn’t repair it properly,” she explained. “So, it caused a hole between my abs where my belly button was.”

“I noticed after I got the tummy tuck and I was like, ‘Something’s just not right in my belly button,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘It’s kind of weird.’ It would almost look like an outie sometimes. I was like, ‘Okay, that’s like not normal.’”

Layla, however, waited years to have the area looked at by a doctor, only doing so after a fan’s comment finally prompted her into action.

“It was actually a video from Coachella,” she said, “and I do like a little circle in the video, and you can tell when I like turn to the side that my belly button’s protruding. And she’s like, ‘Hey, you have a hernia. You should probably get that checked out.’ I was like, ‘Oh, yes.’”

And while Layla may rue the day she said yes to free surgery, she also understands why she did it.

“I was a single mom and I was like wanting to date and wanted to feel good in my body,” she said. “And not even just like that—I wanted to just look good for myself, too. And I couldn’t afford a surgery at that point. And when I’m offered a free surgery, I was like, ‘Oh my god, yeah, I’m going to do it.’”

Plus, Layla emphasized that growing up in Utah meant being constantly surrounded by intense beauty standards.

“Oh my gosh, everyone is so obsessed with vanity and it’s so hard,” she emphasized. “I know so many girls that were 18 and as their 18th birthday present, they got gifted boob jobs. So, it’s just it’s so weird how everyone’s just so obsessed with how they look.”

“I get it. You want to present yourself, you know, the right way to the world and you want to feel pretty,” she said. “But I think Utah does take it a step too far.”

And though she can’t change her past decisions, she can try to warn others away from the cheaper path.

“I wish I would have just waited until I could have afforded to pay for it myself,” she said of her past cosmetic changes. “My biggest piece of advice if you’re ever offered something for free, just pay for it and go to somebody that you know for a fact is going to do it right.”
