Tom Holland Talks MCU Spider-Man Future, Teases ‘Setting Up the Next Chapter’ for Miles Morales

Spider-Man star Tom Holland has discussed his Marvel future, and says he wants to help set up a new era for the franchise — potentially starring Miles Morales.

Speaking to Empire, Holland discussed his upcoming fourth Spider-Man solo movie Brand New Day, and revealed how he had pitched its storyline about Peter Parker’s personal transformation: something he dubbed as his character’s “Spider-Puberty.”

Looking further ahead, Holland also hinted that he already knew how he’d like his iteration of the famed webslinger to exit the MCU — after shepherding in a fresh Spider-Man, or Spider-Woman, as his replacement.

“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Holland said.

It’s currently unknown how long Holland’s new Marvel contract runs, though it’s widely expected that Brand New Day will begin a fresh trilogy for his take on the superhero. Indeed, in a production note penned following the conclusion of Brand New Day’s filming, Holland suggested he hoped to return several more times.

“Whatever that looks like, I don’t know,” Holland continued. “But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”

Here, Holland is referencing the mentor role that Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark played early in his Spider-Man tenure, such as in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Whether this means we’d likely meet Miles Morales before the end of Holland’s second trilogy, however, is unclear.

Regardless, Holland says he’s now taking a more senior role on the Spider-Man films’ production, with his story ideas incorporated into Brand New Day.

“This is the first time in my tenure as Spider-Man that I was kind of welcomed into the writers’ room,” Holland said. “[We would] meet once every two weeks to pitch ideas and discuss our ambitions and what we wanted to try and do.

“My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty.’ What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing? ‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio — which was immediately shot down. But they liked the kernel of the idea and it grew into what we have in the movie now.”

Brand New Day’s record-breaking trailer has hinted at Holland’s Spider-Man physically transforming somehow, with shots of him breaking out of a webbed cocoon. Fans have speculated the film may feature the Venom symbiote or see Peter transform into the many-limbed Man-Spider — but exactly what’s going on, we’ll have to wait and see.

When could we meet the MCU’s Miles Morales? Several nods to the character have already been dropped in MCU Spider-Man films, but these have been little more than Easter eggs. In the meantime, Sony has been busy using the character as the star of its Spider-Verse films, and also as a playable protagonist in Insomniac’s Spider-Man PlayStation series.

Until then, Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31.
